You Me At Six

You Me at Six – Cold Night

April 15, 2014 by Rich Leave a Comment

Having formed a strong identity as a powerful UK pop-punk band with their first three albums, You Me at Six now seem to be turning in a more arena rock direction, softening their sound and seeking to gain a wider appeal in the process. ‘Cold Night‘ is the latest single from the band, and with an intro not too dissimilar to that of ‘Pretty Little Girl‘ from blink-182’s ‘Dogs Eating Dogs‘ EP, ‘Cold Night‘ could potentially have grown into something more, built up to a huge chorus that we’ve come to associate You Me At Six over the years, unfortunately though this just never happens.

Whilst You Me At Six have explored mellower territory before and been hugely successful with it in the past, ‘Cold Night‘ is a track that feels distinctly flat and lacking in personality. There’s little to really grab on to with ‘Cold Night‘, instrumentally there’s some pretty interesting stuff going on, the vocals lack punch though and this is what really holds the single back overall. With You Me At Six’s biggest sounding singles Josh Franceschi’s vocals are always at the very heart of the track, driving through the music and hitting hard with a huge dose of passion and charisma; ‘Cold Night‘ lacks the vocal power to really hold the single together, it feels feeble and lacks the passion and personality that has always surrounded the band’s music.

‘Cold Night‘ is still recognisably You Me At Six, the heart has been cut out of the band’s sound though and what we are therefore left with is an empty shell of what the band once was. ‘Cold Night‘ feels familiar, but just doesn’t seem quite right.

You Me At Six – Fresh Start Fever

January 30, 2014 by Rich Leave a Comment

Following on from the release of last year’s hugely infectious ‘Lived A Lie‘ single, You Me At Six now announce the arrival of their fourth studio album ‘Cavalier Youth‘ with another new single in the form of ‘Fresh Start Fever‘.

Whilst ‘Lived A Lie‘ came complete with a huge chorus and incredible sing-along factor, ‘Fresh Start Fever‘ feels distinctly bland in comparison, lacking the strong pop sensibilities that usually make the band’s music so exciting. ‘Fresh Start Fever‘ is still very obviously a You Me At Six single and doesn’t stray too far from the band’s tried and tested pop-punk formula, it lacks the wow factor that characterises the vast majority of the band’s single releases, however, and whilst it does seem to get a bit better the more you listen to it, it doesn’t really blow you away in the manner that you generally expect a You Me At Six single to.

‘Fresh Start Fever‘ just seems like a very lukewarm way to see in the release of ‘Cavalier Youth‘, a perfectly reasonable album track but perhaps just not one that should have been chosen as a single. You Me At Six at their infectious best is always an absolute delight to hear, unfortunately this is far from being the band at their best though and they’ve written far better songs than this in the past and no doubt will continue to release much better music than this in the future, too.

You Me At Six – Lived A Lie

September 5, 2013 by Rich Leave a Comment

Having always had a great knack for penning incredibly catchy pop-punk songs, You Me At Six once again showcases with ‘Lived A Lie‘ a fantastic ear and ability for this sound with what is perhaps the band’s most impressive single to date. Josh Franceschi is a frontman that has really matured since the band first rose to fame with their ‘Take Off Your Colours‘ début album in 2008, and with ‘Lived A Lie‘ he shows just how far he has come over the past five years, a great tonal quality to his voice that is absolutely central to this track’s success.

With an extremely strong guitar intro, ‘Lived A Lie‘ is a track that grabs your full undivided attention right from the offset, maintaining it throughout with some excellent instrumental quality, brilliant vocals, and an absolutely incredible chorus. Like a lot of the band’s singles the past few years, ‘Lived A Lie‘ gets straight inside your head and has you singing along in no time as Josh Franceschi belts out the single’s anthemic chorus. The track is absolutely infectious, a piece of music that all of the band’s members can definitely be very proud of, and a single that should surely go down well with the band’s fan base as well as perking up a few ears of the as yet uninitiated.

Whilst You Me At Six went a little darker on studio album number three with collaborations with Bring Me the Horizon’s Oli Sykes and Parkway Drive’s Winston McCall, the band has never really strayed too far from that tried and tested pop-punk formula, and if ‘Lived A Lie‘ is anything to go by then this will continue to be the case with fourth studio album ‘Cavalier Youth‘, due for release later this year.

You Me At Six is a band has definitely improved a great deal since the ‘Take Off Your Colours‘ days, and this first single from ‘Cavalier Youth‘ definitely provides great hope and promise that the next album will mark another great leap forward as the band continues to progress, mature, and improve.

You Me At Six – Bite My Tongue (feat. Oli Sykes)

October 24, 2011 by Rich Leave a Comment

The second single to be taken from You Me At Six’s ‘Sinners Never Sleep‘ album, ‘Bite My Tongue‘ is an impressive little offering from the band featuring guest vocal work from Bring Me The Horizon’s Oli Sykes. Given the inclusion of Oli Sykes on the track, it therefore comes as little surprise that the track has a little more bite about it than we’ve become accustomed to in the past with the music of You Me At Six. The pop punk style we’ve come to associate with the band is still very much there, and if you’ve had a chance to listen to the band’s ‘Sinners Never Sleep‘ album then you’ll have noticed that a number of the tracks continue on from where ‘Hold Me Down‘ left off. ‘Bite My Tongue‘ is one of the tracks that hints at where the band may be heading in the future however, a track that very quickly gets into its stride with some powerful guitar work and the impressive vocal styling of Josh Franceschi.

The vocal screams of Oli Sykes contrast nicely with the more clean vocal approach of Josh Franceschi. The track most definitely benefits from the presence of Oli Sykes, and it’s his vocal duties that really help to give this track an extra edge. Without Sykes’ presence this would still be a decent offering from You Me At Six, with the Bring Me The Horizon man present here however the track is really taken to another level when he makes his appearance. Perhaps one possible direction for the future of You Me At Six could be for them to add an additional vocalist alongside Josh, someone to add a few screams and growls to the music whilst Josh Franceschi continues to provide the clean vocal touch. ‘Time Is Money‘ featuring Winston McCall of Parkway Drive fame provides further evidence that this could be a worthwhile avenue for the band to consider for the future.

The music of You Me At Six certainly seems to be changing, the future looks good for the band however, and if you’ve ever been a fan of the band’s sound in the past then I’d definitely recommend checking out ‘Bite My Tongue‘. In fact, given the band’s shift towards a slightly heavier sound, even if you haven’t been a fan of the band in the past then still give ‘Bite My Tongue‘ a chance as you just might be impressed with what you find here.
