10 Things We Want to See in FIFA 18 Career Mode

February 10, 2017 by Rich Leave a Comment

FIFA 17 career mode didn’t really bring much to the table that wasn’t already present in FIFA 16 career mode. They introduced ‘Total Club Management’, but that’s basically just a new menu system that shows all your season objectives in one place; nothing groundbreaking and definitely not something to get too excited about!

It’s therefore time to start looking forward to FIFA 18 career mode and consider new additions to the game that could potentially help improve the game mode and make it a more enjoyable and generally more immersive experience.

Here are my thoughts on 10 things that could be added to career mode to improve things for FIFA 18…

ONLINE CAREER MODE

The career mode gameplay can get quite stale sometimes due to its rather repetitive nature, but how good would it be if EA could introduce some form of online career mode?!

You could go up against your mates online, doing business with them and making cheeky bids for some of their up and coming talents, and it could also make the YouTube career mode community quite interesting, watching some of your favourite YouTubers go head to head in online action. Imagine how good it would be to witness an online career mode series featuring the likes of CaniSports, ChesnoidGaming, My Player master BfordLancer… And Rich Leigh, maybe? You’ve maybe not heard of him, but I hear he makes some fantastic career mode content over on YouTube…

LEAGUE EXPANSION & TOURNAMENT EXPANSION

The Chinese Super League is one league that many people would love to see added for FIFA 18, and with the arrival of new leagues in the game, it’d also be pretty awesome to see new tournaments added to the game as well. I want to be able to compete in the AFC Champions League or the CONCACAF Champions League for example. I’ve always thought that it could be quite fun to manage an MLS side in the game, but without any continental tournament to compete in, I’ve never bothered doing so as playing the same teams over and over again every season would soon become incredibly tiresome.

I’d love to see the Chinese Super League included in FIFA 18 career mode, and I’d also massively appreciate the inclusion of more continental tournaments.

YOUTH LEAGUES

At the moment, the youth system in FIFA career mode is really quite basic. At the start of every month you get an update on how the youth players are all developing and their overall stats and potential can alter, but there’s no real way to track a young player’s development in-game unless you take a screenshot at the start of every month and track a player’s progress this way.

The addition of youth leagues in FIFA 18 career mode would be absolutely brilliant in my opinion and would provide a much better way of tracking youth player progress in the game. Your youth team could go up against the youth teams of other sides in the same division and the game could offer player stats like those provided for players in the first team so that you could keep an eye on important information such as how many goals everyone is scoring, what average ratings players are getting, and how many clean sheets different defenders and goalkeepers are maintaining.

Keeping track of youth player progress in this manner would also come together rather nicely with the point I’m about to talk about next, and that’s…

THE REMOVAL OF PREDEFINED PLAYER POTENTIAL

At the moment, when a youth player comes through the system, the game initially offers you a rather vague estimation of how good this player can become in the future, and the more months they’re in the academy for, the more precise this figure becomes until ultimately you know pretty much exactly how good this player will become. Also, if you want to find out a real life player’s potential, you head on over to SoFIFA.com where the latest database information is right there waiting for you. I’d like to see the player potential system in FIFA career mode completely reworked in such a way that better reflects how players truly develop in reality.

In FIFA 15 for example, Harry Kane went from having 74 potential at the start of the game, to 84 potential by the end of it on the basis that he enjoyed an absolutely sensational season in reality. In FIFA 18 career mode, you should be able to take a relatively unknown player and turn them into a superstar by consistently performing well with them on the football field. There shouldn’t just be a static, predefined potential for that player; other factors should come into play such as a players performances and whether or not they suffer any major injuries or time on the sidelines throughout their development. You should have to nurture young talents to help them reach their full potential, not just leave them sitting there in the squad, knowing that regardless of what you do, their rating will continue to develop and they will ultimately shine.

There should certainly be some sort of base stat for potential that offers a guideline as to how good a player may become in the future, but this should be a flexible figure that can alter as a result of in-game occurrences.

As it stands, when you send a player out on loan or they transfer to another club, their potential can alter in the process, and this is something that I very much like and appreciate. A loan move can make or break a player in reality, and it can also impact upon their future in career mode as well. If you just leave a player in your squad though, their potential won’t alter, regardless of what you do, and this is something that I’d like to see changed. Consistent good performances should be rewarded with an increase to that players overall stats and potential, whilst poor performances and periods of stagnation should result in a player’s progress being hampered.

THE ABILITY FOR PLAYERS TO LEARN NEW POSITIONS

This is something that I’ve spoken about before in a video that I did with a bunch of other career mode YouTubers last year, and that’s the ability for players to learn new positions within the game. EA updates the career mode database several times per week now and players will have certain positions added and removed from their abilities throughout the year, but what I’d very much like to see is the ability for players to learn new positions throughout the course of a career mode. You can train a player in different areas and therefore make them more useful in different positions, but the game will never update a players positioning to show where they’re most useful.

Bale is one such example of a player that could benefit from this new addition to the game; in the past he has at times been listed as able to play as a striker, but right now the game only recognises him as a right winger. He also started out his career as a left back, and I have at times had some pretty solid success with Bale, once again having him operating as a full back. You can of course play people anywhere and it doesn’t really massively matter whether or not the game suggests that they should be playing there, but it’d certainly satisfy my OCD if players could learn new positions. It’d also be quite nice if when you moved a player into a different position on the pitch, their rating altered to show you how effective they are in that position. Right now, players just have a rating set for how good they are in their primary position, and wherever you put them, they’ll still show the same rating.

CONTRACT CLAUSES

At the moment, contract negotiations are very simplistic, and I would love to see much more depth added to the game in this area. When you sell a player to another club, there should at least be the option to insert a buy back clause, or maybe even a sell-on clause as well. It’s minor details like this that would really help to make career mode more realistic, immersive, and just generally more enjoyable to play.

In addition to this, I’d also like to see clauses in loan contracts as well as right now, when you send a player out on loan; that player can end up playing against you if you ever have to play that team. That never really happens in reality as there’s usually a clause that prohibits them from playing against their parent club. Add this to FIFA career mode please, EA.

STADIUM EXPANSION

For teams that don’t have their official stadium in the game, I feel that stadium expansion should be an option, especially if you’re managing a side in a Road to Glory style series. It’s all very well playing in a tiny little stadium when you’re battling it out in League Two, but once you’ve taken your team to the Champions League and are challenging for the Premier League title every season, you don’t really want to be doing so at Town Park or some other such small generic stadium featured in the game.

As you get further into the game, there should be the option to expand upon the stadium that you already have, or upgrade to a larger generic stadium that’s featured in career mode. I’m not asking for the ability to set the price of hot dogs in the stadium or anything silly like that, it’d just be nice if the game would recognise your progress in career mode and update your stadium to better suit the prestige level that your team has reached within the game.

THE ABILTIY TO MAKE CHANGES IN SIMULATED MATCHES

Simulated matches in FIFA career mode currently consist of setting your team, pressing sim match, and hitting advance. Once you’ve done that, the players start warming up and the simulated match begins. There’s no ability to provide any input whatsoever and it’s all very limited. As it stands, I don’t tend to simulate matches as the whole process is just a bit rubbish. If there was the ability to make tactical changes or substitutions during simulated matches then this I feel would provide a fantastic step forward for career mode. For FIFA 17, all EA really did with career mode was change up the way that the board expectations are presented. It wasn’t enough and we want more from the career mode experience. There’s so much that they could do to improve career mode, and in my opinion, offering increased involvement in simulated matches would be an absolutely fantastic addition to the game for FIFA 18.

PLAYER STATS FOR OTHER LEAGUES

You can find out player stats for other teams in your own league and for all of the major tournaments taking place that season, but you can’t for example, be managing a team in England and scope out other leagues like the Bundesliga or Belgian Pro League to see what players are performing best in other leagues around the world. When I play Football Manager, especially once I’m a few seasons into the game, I’m constantly sniffing around in other divisions and looking for top talents abroad. I like to find out what players have the most goals in other divisions, what players have the most assists, and also what players have the highest average ratings. I can’t do that in FIFA career mode though… ‘Scouting’ in FIFA career mode currently basically just involves looking on SoFIFA and using the filters to look for pacey, strong, or high potential players.

As I stated earlier though, I’d like to see the removal of predefined potential in career mode. I want player potential to be more based around a players performance and whether or not they get knocked back by injuries or long spells in the reserves or on the sidelines. This kind of change to the structure of the game would make player stats for other leagues extremely useful. We could find out how players are getting on in other leagues around the world, scout them further if interested, and make decisions from there as to whether or not we wish to sign them. I love looking at players’ stats in reality, enjoy this method of seeking out players in Football Manager, and would also love for this to become a part of the process in FIFA 18 career mode as well.

TEAMS WITH AN INDIVIDUAL IDENTITY

When you play FIFA 17 career mode, teams don’t really have any sort of identity or game plan that separates them from the pack. Sometimes smaller teams will park the bus, but that’s about all the variety you really get from the career mode experience right now. Every team plays in the exact same style, just to varying degrees of success. If teams like Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern were brilliant and lower level teams were poor, this would be one thing, but that’s not even usually the case. You can be playing Barcelona in the Champions League one week, Bolton Wanderers in the EFL Cup the next, yet it’ll be Bolton that provide you with the sternest test. Bolton will be passing it around with precision, turning their backs on you, successfully shielding the ball at every opportunity, whilst Barcelona will play in the same style, but worse.

It’s not always the way that the big teams are poor and the smaller ones are excellent, but it’s often the case nonetheless. I think I’ve probably been beaten by Sunderland more times in career mode than I have Manchester City… And why is it that Jonjo Shelvey always seems to score against me as well? Stop it. Just stop it.

Anyway though, back on track… I want to see teams given more of an individual identity in career mode. Different teams should have different game plans and play in their own distinctive style. Not only would this make things more interesting, but it’d also make the game more difficult as well as right now, once you figure out how to play against the computer and find a style that works; that style will basically work against every team in the game. You don’t really ever have to vary the way that you play the game and unlock the opposition, as right now, CPU controlled teams never really operate any differently. When you go up against someone online, there’s always that battle of reading the way that they play the game and working out how best to stop them, a constant contest of skill and brain work as you look to stop the other person’s attacks, block off their passing lanes, and vary your own game as well so as not to make it too easy for them to work out what you’re going to be doing next.

Right now CPU controlled teams have no real unique identity and this brings me full circle in crying out for some form of online career mode. If EA aren’t going to improve the artificial intelligence, please let us put ourselves to the test in career mode against other real-life humans. I don’t ask for much in life, but I definitely want to battle my mates and all the good friends that I’ve made in the FIFA community, negotiating transfer deals with them and just generally having a bit more fun with career mode. Make it happen, EA. Just make it happen.

So these are some of the things that I’d like to see changed for FIFA 18 career mode… What additions and new features would you like to see present in the next game? Leave me your thoughts in the comments section down below and I very much look forward to hearing from you!

10 Things I Want to See in FIFA 18 Ultimate Team

February 6, 2017 by Rich Leave a Comment

FIFA 18 won’t be released until late September, but the beta will no doubt be available a few months prior to that and it’s therefore time to start looking forward to the future and working out what needs to be done as we move towards the release of EA’s next football title.

The following is a list of 10 things that I personally would absolutely love to see included in FIFA 18 Ultimate Team:

BETTER REWARDS FOR WINNING

At the moment, the rewards for winning games and divisions as well for that matter are really quite feeble. It takes a pretty long time to build up coins from playing matches, and currently it’ll set you back several games worth of match coins just to pick up a healing card.

More coins should be offered for matches, especially if you win them, and in my opinion; the prize money should also be a lot better for achieving glory within the game. Right now, if you win Division 1, you get a mere 15,000 coins. Hold your position in the top division and you’ll get an even less; 7,500, enough coins to buy ONE premium gold pack. You do get automatic qualification for the Weekend League in both of these cases as well, and the rewards from doing well in that are admittedly pretty good, but not everyone has enough time at the weekend to compete in 40 matches and reap the full rewards that the Weekend League experience potentially has to offer.

I would love to see more match coins awarded for successfully completing matches, and a more generous offering of coins for doing well in Divisions would make progression through the league system far more appealing. Maybe you could get a 100k pack for winning Division 1 in addition to some sort of coin reward? Even if it was untradeable, at least this would provide a bit more incentive to work your way up the ladder and ultimately strive to win Division 1.

CHEAPER PACKS/CHEAPER FIFA POINTS

Moving on from that last point about receiving better rewards from winning things; another thing that could do with being addressed is the cost of packs. If you’re playing matches to make coins, 7.5k is a fair amount to save up for a Premium Gold Pack where a Squad Fitness Card is probably usually the most valuable card in there.

If match rewards were better, then pack prices maybe wouldn’t seem so steep, but right now; the price of packs is just far too much, which makes taking the FIFA Point route a much more appealing method, as at least that way you’re not eating into your hard earned coins. FIFA Points are expensive though; 12,000 FIFA Points cost about twice as much as the game itself does in the first place. £79.99 if you’re in the UK, or £71.99 if you have EA Access. This makes Premium Gold Packs about a quid each, or 90p each if you’re signed up for EA Access.

Whether you’re paying with coins, or paying with FIFA Points, FIFA Ultimate Team packs are incredibly expensive and in my opinion, the price of them should be much lower.

LEGENDS ON PS4

At the moment, Microsoft have an exclusive deal with EA and Legends are therefore only available on Xbox. Potentially that exclusivity period is coming to an end though and the likes of Pele, Gullit and Okocha could well be arriving in FIFA 18 Ultimate Team for PS4 users as well as those on Xbox. Maybe David Beckham will be introduced as a new legend for FIFA 18 as well? I live in hope.

IMPROVED TRANSFER FUNCTIONS

At the time of writing this, squad fitness cards are selling for about 1,000 coins each, yet if I search for Gold fitness cards between 950 and 1,000 coins buy it now, I have to scroll through pages and pages of regular fitness cards before I come across the items I’m actually looking for.

It’s a similar sort of issue with in-form player searches as well; you can search for a player’s special card within a certain price range, but if that player has more than one in-form card, you can’t narrow that search down to simply look for the card that you’re interested in. You can hit ‘Compare Price’ once you do find the card you want, but it then displays EVERY card for sale on the transfer market, regardless of their listing price. Oh, and if you want to find a specific stadium on the transfer market? Good luck with that.

Another thing that’s slightly frustrating right now is the lack of a rare/non-rare filter on the transfer market. This would be a useful addition to the game and I for one would definitely appreciate the inclusion of such a filter.

I definitely feel that the search function could do with some improvements, and the same goes for selling items as well. Throughout the year, I tend to pick up hundreds upon hundreds of contract cards and fitness cards. Occasionally I’ll have a clear out and get rid of them en-masse, but this can be quite a long-winded experience as you have to go through and list up each item individually. It would be quite a nice time saving feature if you could set your price, then list multiple items at this price point at the same time.

SQUAD CONTRACT CARDS

Some people would like to see the complete removal of fitness and contract cards, which is fair enough, but if they are here to stay; something that I’d definitely like to see added to the game for FIFA 18 is squad contract cards. When your team are looking a bit tired, you can happily apply a squad fitness card and restore the team to their full effectiveness, but sometimes multiple players run out of contract at the same time and it’s just a bit frustrating having to go through and offer them all fresh contracts individually before you can hop into your next game.

Squad contracts would provide another fantastic time saving feature, and a smoother, more hassle-free experience is surely something what we’re all ultimately striving for.

THE RETURN OF ONLINE TOURNAMENTS (BRONZE/SILVER ETC.)

Presumably they took away the old online tournaments to encourage more people to get involved in the Weekend League, but personally I’d love to see the return of regular online tournaments. I’ve always been a big fan of trying out different players within the game, and in FIFA 16 I absolutely loved playing the online bronze tournaments. Putting together a team of bronze beasts and going up against other people seeking to get the best out of their bronze beauties.

Adam Armstrong scored so many goals for me in online Ultimate Team tournaments last year; he was one of the most clinical finishers I ever used in the game and always seemed to place the ball into the top corner against the opposition bronze keepers.

This year though, bronze and silver tournaments only exist for offline action, and who really plays FIFA Ultimate Team offline? I don’t think I’ve used any bronze players whatsoever this year, possibly not really any silvers either, and the lack of these kinds of tournaments has made me far less adventurous in my team selections. I play most of my matches with a pretty regular Premier League side, but further incentive to play with more bronze and silver players again would definitely be much welcomed. Perhaps Bronze and Silver drafts could become a thing in FIFA 18 Ultimate Team? The entry fee could be lowered to reflect the different levels of Draft and this could be an interesting new expansion to the FUT Draft experience.

GENERATIONS CARDS?

On Futhead you can put together a Generations squad and use cards from any version of FIFA Ultimate Team. You can have a bit of fun building together teams featuring some of your favourite players past and present, and it would be absolutely brilliant to see these generations cards brought into play in FIFA 18 Ultimate Team. Maybe not in regular packs, but perhaps there could be a new Generations FUT Draft game mode. There was so much hype around the FUT Draft last year, but with the introduction of the Weekend League this year, that all seems to have died down a bit.

A Generations FUT Draft could be a good way of restoring more interest in the game mode again though, and could provide a fantastic opportunity to play with some of those old cards that you loved so much in years gone by. I’ve only played one draft this year, but a Generations Draft would definitely get me involved in the game mode again and I could certainly see myself spending a lot of time and potentially money on it, too.

ABILITY TO CREATE YOUR OWN BADGE/KITS

You’d probably end up with a LOT of ridiculously ugly kits, and a fair amount of badges featuring poorly drawn penises, but the ability to create your own kits and badges in Ultimate Team could be quite a nice touch. You name your team and you can use any kits and badges featured in the game that you like, but allowing people a little bit of creativity like this could be absolutely awesome.

Currently when you pre-order the game you get a few special edition kits, but maybe in future, instead of doing this, pre-ordering the game could grant you the access to start putting your own design work and creativity to the test, producing a couple of kits and a badge that you can choose to use in the game? Personally, I’d love that.

ABILITY TO LOAN OUT YOUR PLAYERS

Loan players obviously already exist in FIFA Ultimate Team, but not in this manner and a cool new feature for the game could perhaps be the ability to loan out your players to other clubs. In addition to the transfer list, there could be a new loan list where you could search for players available for loan. Different loan lengths would be available, so maybe you could take a player for one day, three days, or one week, and you could use the filters to search for your desired loan length.

We’ve all been there where we’ve splashed out big on a new star player for our side, only to get into a few games with them and find that they don’t suit our play style whatsoever. You instantly want to move them on again, but then of course you get hit with that 5% tax. A try before you buy system like this could be a good way of experimenting with different players, and could also provide a nice additional way of making a few coins when you’re away or unable to play the game for whatever reason.

Also, sometimes you get a really good untradeable player, but for a league that you don’t actually play with and so that player largely goes to waste. If you could loan them out though then they’d at least serve some sort of purpose.

POSITION CHANGES FOR PLAYERS THAT CAN PLAY MULTIPLE POSITIONS

Despite the fact that he plays there on 7 chem, Moussa Sissoko has been an absolutely insane centre mid for me this year in FIFA Ultimate Team. He’s big, he’s strong, he can defend pretty well, and also has some very nice finishing ability as well when he’s venturing forward. Also, if you look at his positioning in-game then you can see that the game does actually recognise him as a CAM as well as a right mid.

What I’d like to see for FIFA 18 Ultimate Team is the ability to switch players into another position that they’re capable of playing. You could switch regular Ronaldo for example from a left winger to a striker, or stick super Sissoko through the middle without the need to have him on 7 chemistry. You can already turn a CDM into a striker… Why not allow it so that players can play other positions that the game already recognises them as able to play?

If you’ve got any thoughts on what you’d like to see changed for FIFA 18? Let me know your ideas in the comments section down below!

10 Things I Hate About FIFA 17 Career Mode

January 27, 2017 by Rich 1 Comment

The FIFA 17 gameplay is much better than the gameplay of FIFA 16 in my opinion, but nothing has really changed in terms of career mode.

For FIFA 16, EA added player training and pre-season tournaments, but for FIFA 17 career mode there are no such killer new features and career mode has therefore massively stagnated.

Here are 10 things I hate about FIFA 17 career mode:

Faceless Players

When a player has no photo, I’m probably not going to want to sign them; no matter how good they are or how much potential they have, their creepy faceless form just isn’t wanted in my club.

Obviously I do understand that for whatever reason it’s not going to be easy to have everyone’s photo in the game, but when youth players come through the academy with that weird silhouetted alien face? That just doesn’t make any sense.

Youth Players That Look Nothing Like Their Photo

Now, real life players can obviously be known to change their appearance quite frequently and it’s therefore to be expected that their in game photo and appearance may not reflect their current look in reality. When you get a youth player that looks nothing like their photo though? Now that’s just baffling. How can the game that created them not have any idea what they’re supposed to look like?!

Messi will join Real Madrid, yet CR7 refuses to sign for Barca

Messi is supposed to be a ‘One Club Player’, yet if you offer him enough money he will happily sign for Real Madrid, whilst Cristiano Ronaldo refuses to switch allegiances and join you at Barcelona no matter how much money you try and offer him.

Now, I’ve taken full advantage of this fact… Twice. But I still don’t really think it’s right that the supposed ‘one club player’ is shown to be supremely greedy, whilst Ronaldo is painted to possess the pinnacle of morality. Either make it so that they’ll both refuse their rivals, or just have it so that they can both be persuaded by piles and piles of cold, hard cash.

Player Deterioration

When players hit the age of 29 or 30 in career mode this year, their physical stats suddenly fall away massively. There’s not much point in signing older players anymore as they don’t hold their value at all well, they very quickly get worse and once they hit their mid 30s, a number of them will have some physical stats in the single figures.

At the other end of the spectrum… Player Growth is also an issue this year.

Goalkeepers very quickly develop 99 kicking, defenders frequently end up with 99 strength, and attacking players can quite often end up with 99 pace and dribbling ability.

With so many younger players developing 99 rated physical stats; once you get a few seasons into career mode, playing the game becomes a very different beast. Defenders are suddenly supremely fast to react and track you down, slamming your players to the ground with their overpowered physicality, whilst attacking players zoom around like Usain Bolt and there’s often absolutely nothing that you can do about it.

It certainly adds a greater degree of difficulty to the gameplay, but it’s also something that needs tweaking by EA in the future as loads of younger players shouldn’t be developing 99 rated physical stats so easily, just as older players shouldn’t be losing every bit of mobility that they previously possessed.

Legendary Difficulty is way too Easy

Legendary difficulty was pretty straightforward in FIFA 16, but in FIFA 17 it’s generally even more simple. Teams do actually attack you, something that was quite the rarity in FIFA 16, but there seems to be very little defensive intelligence written into the game, to the point where CPU controlled defenders frequently seem to run in the opposition direction when they see you coming.

I’m top of the table after 12 games playing as Crystal Palace, 4 points clear of second and already 10 points ahead of the team in fifth. It shouldn’t be this easy to dominate on legendary difficulty, especially not with a team that’s actually struggling in reality.

The top difficulty is far too easy and this has therefore led to numerous people utilising sliders in order to make the game less straightforward. Definitely check out Cutzy’s video on his ‘Extreme Difficulty’ setting for the game if you’re finding things too easy and would like more of a challenge in FIFA 17 Career Mode.

Every Team Plays in the Exact Same Play Style

This really goes hand in hand with the last point about the game being too easy, but every team plays in the exact same style and that can therefore be incredibly frustrating. In PES, teams are programmed to have more of an identity and throughout games you’ll notice that they actually change the way that they’re operating in order to deal with the way that you’re playing.

In FIFA 17 career mode, however, every team has the exact same style and there’s therefore no real need for tactical adjustment; you find a play style that works and you stick with it as if it works against one team, it’s pretty much going to work against anyone. There needs to be more work put in to providing teams with individual identities as right now every team utilises the exact same methods and once you’ve learned how to play against the CPU, the game just becomes supremely straightforward.

Transfers

In FIFA 16, David Alaba was pretty much guaranteed to be signed by Juventus, a scripted transfer that I’ve again noticed multiple times whilst playing FIFA 17 career mode for myself and from watching videos about the game from others.

It’s not just scripted transfers that are frustrating in FIFA 17 though; it’s teams going about their business in a completely ridiculous manner. Why would any team ever buy three top strikers in the same transfer window, spending close to £200 million in the process? The transfer system in FIFA 17 definitely needs some work as right now teams make some very curious decisions.

Homesickness

In FIFA 16 I had to deal with Oxford born Callum O’Dowda informing me of his homesickness several times over. Apparently Oxford United just isn’t close enough to home for his liking and so he ended up moving away to restore his happiness… To the distant land of Birmingham.

In FIFA 17 homesickness seems to be even more prevalent and players frequently seem to become unhappy, leading to the board putting them up for sale and accepting any transfer offer that’s received. Whilst simulating forward in the game, testing out various factors such as player growth and decline, I’ve noticed that at least one player usually becomes unhappy each season and asks to be sold.

Unlike in previous games where you could offer a player more money and they’d suddenly change their mind and realise that they’re actually perfectly happy, that is no longer something that can be done in FIFA 17; you can of course put them up for loan and no matter where they go, as soon as they’re loaned out their homesickness will magically disappear, but it definitely happens a bit too frequently in this game and if you’re not paying attention to your inbox then you can easily lose one of your star players.

One Final Point… And this is a pretty big one! Nothing Has Really Changed.

With FIFA 16 career mode we had some pretty decent additions to the game in the form of pre-season tournaments and player training. This year though, all they’ve really done is changed the way that board expectations are presented. The board expectations now have their own menu and there is also now a manager rating that appears in the top left hand corner of the screen based around these expectations and informing you of how you’re doing as a manager.

It’s a nice touch, I guess, it doesn’t really massively add anything to the career mode experience though and sometimes when you load your save back up; the number in the top left hand corner just completely changes from what it was at when you last played the game. So whilst this one and only (and frankly very minimal) change to the game may be welcomed by some, it doesn’t even actually work very well. Awesome, right?

What annoys you about FIFA 17 career mode? Leave me a comment down below and let me know your thoughts!

The Top 10 Best Wonderkids in FIFA 17 Career Mode

September 8, 2016 by Rich Leave a Comment

A look at the best young players and wonderkids to sign up in FIFA 17 career mode. These are the top 10 highest potential young players in the game, with all of the players featured here possessing 88 potential or above.

English midfield maestro Dele Alli is one of four players aged 21 and under in the game to receive 90 potential for FIFA 17. The other three U21 players with 90 potential are Bayern Munich’s Renato Sanches, Manchester United’s Anthony Martial and Borussia Dortmund’s Ousmane Dembélé.

Also featured in this top 10 are Kingsley Coman (Bayern Munich), Julian Brandt (Bayer Leverkusen), Kurt Zouma (Chelsea), Youri Tielemans (Anderlecht), Alen Halilović (Hamburger SV), and Marco Asensio (Real Madrid).

FIFA 17 will be officially released in Europe on September 27th 2016, although Xbox One users will be able to play the game at an earlier date through EA Access.

Can Pokémon Go Second Generation Help Revive the Hype?

August 31, 2016 by Rich Leave a Comment

Pokémon Go Logo

It was bound to happen sooner of later; Pokémon Go players seemed to be absolutely everywhere when the game was first released, but as reported by the BBC and numerous others, Pokémon Go’s popularity is in decline and as the summer sunshine disappears the popularity of the game from Niantic will no doubt dwindle further.

I, like many others, was quick to download Pokémon Go when it was first released, quickly rising up through the ranks to Level 22, taking down gym’s and raiding PokéStops everywhere I went. It got to a certain point though where it was no longer quite so fun to capture and evolve as many Pidgey’s, Weedle’s and Caterpie’s as possible. Adding new Pokémon to the Pokédex became an increasingly rare occurrence and hatching eggs became more and more of a disappointment as the same Pokémon frequently hatched, shattering my hopes and dreams every time of picking up something new and exciting.

There has been speculation that Niantic may add Generation 2 Pokémon in early 2017, a move that may well revive interest in the game as it once again becomes a more frequent activity to pick up different types of Pokémon on your travels, but will a 2017 release for second generation Pokémon prove to be a little too late?

With interest in Pokémon Go beginning to decline, quick action could well be key to holding people’s interest in the title as the weather gets colder. New features for the game would be an incredibly welcome addition, and adding second generation Pokémon to the mix would definitely help bring me back to my now scarcely opened Pokémon Go app.

Having already picked up Jolteon, Flareon and Vaporeon, the additional Eevee evolutions of Umbreon and Espeon would definitely be greatly appreciated, as would the likes of Bellossom, Politoed and Slowking. Onix is a relatively useless Pokémon to hatch from a 10k egg right now, but with the introduction of Steelix that may well prove to be an absolute game changer.

The introduction of second generation Pokémon evolutions seems absolutely inevitable at some point, but for me it’s an exciting new addition to the game that could really do with happening sooner rather than later.

PES 2017 Gameplay and First Thoughts (Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 Demo)

August 27, 2016 by Rich Leave a Comment

Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 will officially be released In Europe on September 15th, a full two weeks before EA releases its own FIFA 17 title.

With PES 2017 soon to hit the shelves, the official demo has now been released for PS4, Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360, featuring nine playable teams; Arsenal, Atlético Madrid, Barcelona, Boca Juniors, Corinthians, Flamengo, France, Germany and River Plate.

This year Konami has been able to secure an official partnership with Spanish giants FC Barcelona, granting them exclusive use of the club’s Camp Nou stadium in their Pro Evolution Soccer titles. This partnership is big news for the future of PES and demonstrates Konami’s commitment and dedication to the Pro Evolution Soccer series, striving to keep taking the games forward and adding further authenticity and realism. The Camp Nou stadium features in this demo, as does the fictional Neu Sonne Arena.

The Barcelona deal is big news for Konami, but what’s more exciting than anything here is the Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 gameplay. When playing the PES 2017 demo, the individual identities of the teams included in the demo are abundantly apparent; Atlético Madrid play very much like their real-life counterparts, Barcelona play a fast and fluid football game and are extremely potent on the attack with their MSN strikeforce, whilst Arsenal… Well, Arsenal struggle to score goals.

Even when you play out a 0-0 draw in this demo, it feels like you’ve been involved in a real battle and the game is a lot of fun to play. Aesthetically the game certainly doesn’t look as appealing as EA’s FIFA titles and some of the animations are a little on the clunky side, but it’s very hard to find fault with the gameplay itself and surely that’s a major factor in why most people choose to play video games. Sure, in a perfect world we’d have a game that both looks and plays beautifully, but the PES 2017 graphics are far from terrible anyway and the gameplay just feels incredibly authentic.

FIFA 17 will no doubt have a more thriving online community and there will surely be a strong argument for owning both games, but based on the Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 Demo, Konami’s PES 2017 title is definitely a football game to be taken seriously and should be a huge amount of fun to play. If you’ve not yet taken the time to download the PES 2017 demo then I’d definitely recommend doing so. PES 2016 was an impressive game with an excellent offline gameplay experience, and with PES 2017 Konami seem to have taken an already very solid football game and made it even better.

PES 2016 Demo Gameplay and First Thoughts

August 21, 2015 by Rich Leave a Comment

PES 2016

With PES 2016 due for UK release on September 18th 2015, huge interest in the game has now been established due to the official unveiling of the demo.

The graphics look beautiful as ever, the controls feel far more responsive, defending has been massively improved, but how do these changes impact upon the overall quality of the game?

A good attacking player will now make incredibly intelligent runs and you’ll really be able to tell the difference between a good defender and a bad one. When playing with someone like Andrea Pirlo, you’ll find his real-life strengths quite accurately reflected in the game. Each player seems to have their own distinct playing style reminiscent of their true to life self.

There’s certainly a lot to appreciate about PES 2016 from playing the demo, but with the more responsive controls and increased intelligence of attacking players, has Konami made things a little too clean, a little too easy? Playing the game on the ‘Top Player’ difficulty setting, that definitely seems like a fair criticism. ‘Top Player’ is the second highest difficulty setting in PES 2016, there’s also the ‘Super Star’ difficulty setting above that, but ‘Super Star’ is arguably the most logical starting point when playing the demo as anything below that just feels a little too simple.

When playing a new football game for the first time, you expect there to be some sort of learning curve, you expect to suffer a few negative results before you begin to start properly mastering the game. PES 20216 just feels a little bit too ‘pick-up-and-play’ though; the responsive controls and artificial intelligence are to be praised, but they’re also a huge part of what makes the game seem so simple.

There’s still a month to go before the game’s release and some major tweaks may therefore be made before September 18th rolls around. As it stands, however, PES 2016 could definitely do with some fine-tuning in order to make the game as enjoyable an experience as possible.

The Best Young Players in Football Manager 2015

January 9, 2015 by Rich Leave a Comment

Top 5 FM15 Wonderkid Goalkeepers

Ruben Blanco (Celta Vigo)

First up here we’re going to be taking a look at Spanish goalkeeper Ruben Blanco, a player that has come up through the Celta Vigo youth team and progressed on to the first team at the Spanish side. 19 years old, Ruben Blanco is an exciting young player and his talents have already been recognised at youth level for Spain where he has so far played for the U16, U17, U19 and U20 sides. Blanco is definitely a keeper to watch out for in the future in reality, and if you decide to sign him up in Football Manager 2015 then it’s well worth keeping a keen eye on him there as well as if you develop him the right way then you may just have your future goalkeeper sorted.

Stole Dimitrievski (Granada)

At 20 years old, young Macedonian goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski has developed through the youth ranks as an international and has also played for clubs in two of the best leagues in the world, playing for both Udinese and Granada. Dimitrievski is an incredibly talented young goalkeeper, and if you’re looking to develop someone for the future within the game then Dimitrievski is a good player to sign up that should be happy to be a backup goalkeeper for your club, with the hope of developing to become a first team regular in the future.

Stefanos Kapino (Mainz)

Greek international Stefanos Kapino is a young goalkeeper that looks to have a huge career ahead of him in football. Although just 20 years old, Kapino has already been capped at full international level for Greece, having established himself strongly for Panathinaikos in the 2013-14 season. Kapino moved to Germany with Mainz in the summer of 2014 and it’ll be interesting to see what the future has in store for the young player as he continues to progress, develop and improve as he gets used to life in the Bundesliga with Mainz.

Simone Scuffet (Udinese)

An incredibly promising young goalkeeper in reality, Udinese’s Simone Scuffet is most definitely a player well worth taking a look at in Football Manager 2015. Scuffet came through the Udinese youth academy and has gone on to play for the Udinese first team as well as progressing through the Italian youth international ranks with the U17 and U18s. Scuffet is also a fantastic player to take a look at in FIFA 15 career mode, so both major football video games seem to be in agreement about this young player’s potential; Scuffet is probably the biggest young goalkeeping talent in the world right now and this is therefore reflecfted in both Football Manager 2015 and FIFA 15. Pick up Simone Scuffet in Football Manager 2015 and you should have your first choice keeper sorted for the entirety of the save. Scuffet is just 18 years old but already looks to be an absolutely incredible talent and should surely continue to progress and improve massively in the future.

Mickey Van der Hart (Ajax)

Sounding every bit like a world class goalkeeper with a name like Mickey Van der Hart, this young Ajax academy player is a young goalkeeper definitely well worth taking a look at in Football Manager 2015. Having risen up through the ranks of the Ajax youth system, Mickey Van der Hart is now learning his trade out on loan to Go Ahead, enhancing his reputation as a young Dutch goalkeeper with a huge career potentially laying ahead of him in football. Mickey Van der Hart is a young player well worth taking a look at in FM15.

Top 10 FM15 Wonderkid Defenders

Callum Chambers (Arsenal)

Southampton has been a huge hot pot of talent in recent years, with numerous young players progressing through the ranks at the club such as Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to name but a few. Callum Chambers is one of the many talents to have come through the Southampton academy in recent years, going on to sign for Arsenal for a significant fee in summer 2014 as there was a mass exodus from the Hampshire based club. Chambers played fairly regularly for Southampton in the 2013-14 season, since joining Arsenal he has become an ever-present player, however, quickly establishing himself at the club and even earning himself some caps as a full England international. Callum Chambers’ rise to prominence has been an incredibly quick one, it’s definitely worth taking a look at him in FM15 though and if you’re willing to wait a while for his services due to his only just having joined Arsenal, Chambers is a young defender well worth keeping an eye on and monitoring his progression and availability in the future.

Doria (Olympique Marseille)

For the last few years, Brazilian centre back Doria has been one of my very favourite young defenders to pick up within the game. Having previously played for Botafogo in Brazil, Doria could be snapped up and brought over to Europe, instantly settling in his new league and immediately having a huge impact as a very commanding young centre back. In FM15 it won’t be so easy to sign Doria as he’s only just recently joined Olympique Marseille in Ligue 1, it’s definitely well worth keeping an eye on him and seeing how he develops, however, as if previous games in the Football Manager series are anything to go by then Doria should develop to become one of the very best centre back’s in world football.

Matthias Ginter (Borussia Dortmund)

At just 20 years of age, Borussia Dortmund’s Matthias Ginter is already a World Cup winner and looks to have a huge career ahead of him in football. Ginter didn’t actually play for Germany at all at the World Cup, he was in the squad, however, therefore picking up a medal as a member of the 23 man squad. Prior to the World Cup, Matthias Ginter was at SC Freiburg, he transferred to Dortmund in the summer though and this therefore means that you probably won’t be able to pick him up at the start of the game. Ginter may not be available right from the beginning of FM15, definitely regularly scout him though as if he does end up becoming available in the future then he’d certainly be a very worthwhile investment.

Aymeric Laporte (Athletic Bilbao)

Although originally from France, Aymeric Laporte has been with Spanish side Athletic Bilbao since 2010, originally joining the club’s youth academy and then ultimately progressing his way up to the main squad. A regular French Under-21 international, Aymeric Laporte has been linked with a move to Manchester United, and with a 27.5 million Euro release clause in his contract, it may only be a matter of time before Aymeric Laporte ends up leaving Athletic Bilbao and moving on to pastures new. Aymeric Laporte is a young centre back well worth taking a look at in Football Manager 2015.

Marquinhos (PSG)

Much like Doria, Marquinhos has been a very impressive young Brazilian centre back in Football Manager for a few years now and is another player definitely well worth keeping an eye on. Unlike Doria, however, Marquinhos has been in Europe for a few years now and has been with PSG since summer 2013, so if you want to sign Marquinhos then you may well be able to do so right from the start of the game. Marquinhos has performed well since joining PSG, has become a Brazilian international and looks to have a fantastic career ahead of him for both club and country; definitely take a look at Marquinhos in FM15 and thoroughly consider signing up this young centre back.

Luke Shaw (Manchester United)

Having had his first taste of first team football at Southampton in 2011, Luke Shaw became a regular for the club in the 2012-13 season after the south coast side’s promotion to the Premier League. Having proven himself with two very solid seasons at Southampton, Luke Shaw moved on to play for Manchester United in summer 2014 and is now renting out the Cheshire home of former Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo. Shaw has had a troubled start to his Manchester United career in reality, suffering heavily with injury and therefore not getting as much first team football at his new club as he probably would have liked, he’s only 19 years old though and looks to have a fantastic career ahead of him; Shaw has already started to establish himself with England, and with his Manchester United career starting to take shape as well, Luke Shaw could well be a very important player in the future for both club and country. As he only moved to Manchester United in summer 2014 for a fee of £30 million, it’ll probably be pretty difficult to sign him up at the start of Football Manager 2015, it’s definitely worth keeping an eye on him and seeing how things progress though as if you do find in the future that you are able to prize him away from Manchester United then I’d definitely have to say that it’s well worth doing so.

John Souttar (Dundee United)

Still only 18 years old, John Souttar came up through the Dundee United youth system and the young centre back looks to have an absolutely fantastic career ahead of him in football. Having seen the likes of Ryan Gauld and Andrew Robertson move on from the club in the summer transfer window who are also all very impressive players to pick up in Football Manager, John Souttar still remains at the Scottish side and is therefore the most realistic signing of the three in Football Manager 2015, a young Scottish player that you should be able to pick up fairly cheaply at the start of the game.

John Stones (Everton)

Having joined Everton from Barnsley in January 2013, John Stones has gone from strength to strength since joining the Liverpool based club, earning a number of England caps under Roy Hodgson and becoming a regular in the Everton team. Stones is still only 20 years of age, he’s accomplished a lot in the last 18 months, however, rising from playing for a struggling Championship club to playing for a very impressive top flight team. John Stones is a young English talent well worth checking out in Football Manager 2015.

Jesus Vallejo (Zaragoza)

Just 17 years old, Real Zaragoza’s Jesus Vallejo is a young Spanish centre back that looks like an absolutely fantastic prospect for the future. Despite his very young age, Vallejo has already started working his way up through the ranks of the Real Zaragoza first team, also establishing himself as a Spanish youth international in the process. You should be able to pick up Jesus Vallejo pretty cheaply within FM15 at the start, making him a very sound investment as he still has plenty of years of development to come and should be a very solid centre back for you in the future.

Kurt Zouma (Chelsea)

An incredibly strong and powerful young centre half, Kurt Zouma is an awesome looking talent in reality whose in-game potential is also absolutely huge. Having spent three successful seasons in the Saint Etienne first team, Kurt Zouma moved to Chelsea in the summer of 2014 and is now looking to establish himself at Stamford Bridge where he has stiff competition for a first team place from the likes of John Terry, Gary Cahill and fellow youth prospect Nathan Ake. There’s talk that Zouma may be heading out on loan in the January 2015 transfer window in order to gain more first team football, in Football Manager 2015 he is definitely a player to take a look at though and if you sign him up then you should be incredibly impressed with what you find with this talented young beast of a centre back.

Top 10 FM15 Wonderkid Midfielders

Ross Barkley (Everton)

Having risen through the ranks of the Everton youth academy, Ross Barkley really shot to prominence in the 2013-14 season as he started to get a regular game for Everton under Roberto Martinez, becoming a full England international in the process. Barkley went to the 2014 World Cup with England having had a hugely successful season with Everton in reality, and as the 2014-15 season unfolds he continues to impress for both club and country as he carries on making a name for himself as a footballer. Everton are likely to demand quite a high fee for Ross Barkley in Football Manager 2015, if you can manage to sign him up within the game then it’s definitely well worth doing so, however, and if you do manage to sign Everton’s Ross Barkley within the game then he’ll no doubt do a very good job for you.

Ángel Correa (Atlético Madrid)

Although officially an Atlético Madrid player now, Ángel Correa had a very troubled start to his Atlético career as a heart condition was discovered when signing which therefore delayed the move for 6 months until December 13th. Correa is most definitely a player to watch out for in the future in reality, a very talented attack minded player that has a huge amount of pace and skill at his disposal. Ángel Correa is most definitely a player well worth checking out in Football Manager 2015.

Memphis Depay (PSV)

A product of the PSV Eindhoven youth academy, Memphis Depay is a very talented young winger that really announced himself to the world in the summer when he went to the World Cup with the Netherlands. The future definitely looks to be incredibly bright for this young Dutch star in reality, and in FM15 he is also a player well worth investing in. Manchester United have been heavily linked with this talented winger in reality and may well be a future destination for him, right now his focus is the Eredivisie though, attempting to bring the league title back to PSV for the first time since 2008. Memphis Depay is a young Dutch international full of tricks and skills, always looking to outfox a defender with his pace and fancy footwork, and if you do decide to sign him up in Football Manager 2015 then I’m sure you’ll be very impressed with the attacking quality that he has to offer.

Will Hughes (Derby County)

Will Hughes has been an absolutely incredible player in Football Manager for some years now and this is certainly not something that has changed with Football Manager 2015. Hughes remains with Derby County in reality despite having been linked with a move elsewhere for quite some time now, in FM15 you can finally make that move materialise for him, however, taking him to a top Premier League club where he will no doubt flourish. Having played with Hughes in FM many times in the past, I’ve often found that Hughes can immediately make the step up to the top flight and perform well at this level, making him a definite player to have on your radar, regardless of what size of top flight team that you happen to be managing. Hughes really is an absolutely incredible player to invest in within the game and if you’re in need of a new central midfielder then I’d definitely make this young England Under-21 international your first port of call when you enter the transfer target.

Adnan Januzaj (Manchester United)

Adnan Januzaj really rose to prominence in the 2013-14 season by putting in a series of incredibly impressive performances for Manchester United. Starting out the season as a relative unknown, Januzaj soon made himself known to the masses with his performances, becoming one of the best young players in Football Manager 2014 as the game was patched throughout the year and Januzaj rose in strength and ability with each and every update. With Football Manager 2015, Adnan Januzaj is once again a player to take a look at; he’s not been great in the 2014-15 season in reality, in FM15 you can see about restoring him to his solid form of the 2013-14 campaign, however, and if you can persuade Manchester United to part company with this young Belgian wizard then it’s certainly well worth doing as you may just bag yourself a Ballon d’Or candidate of the future.

Mateo Kovacic (Inter Milan)

Already a well established Croatian international at the age of 20, Mateo Kovacic has been with Inter Milan now since February 2013 and is definitely well worth checking out in Football Manager 2015. Kovacic has done extremely well since moving to the Serie A with Inter, adding another element to his game in the 2014-15 season as he has now become a solid goalscorer as well as an all round talented midfielder. Kovacic may not be cheap if you do want to sign him up, but he’s definitely well worth taking a look at anyway.

Lucas Romero (Velez)

Currently playing for Velez in the Argentine Primera Division, Lucas Romero is a fantastic young defensive minded player that can definitely add a bit of grit, steel and determination to your midfield. Lucas Romero was an absolutely wonderful player to sign in Football Manager 2014, one of the very best young midfielders that the game had to offer in fact, and in Football Manager 2015 he is once again a player well worth checking out and scouting. The majority of midfielders listed here are attack minded players that can cause a lot of problems for defences, it’s always useful to have a very solid defensive midfielder in your team though and if you’re looking for someone that will never shirk a tackle then Lucas Romero may well be your man.

Pavel Savitskiy (Neman Grodno)

Neman Grodno’s Pavel Savitskiy is a player well worth picking up in Football Manager 2015, a winger whose contract is due to expire at the end of 2014 and who is therefore available on a pre-contract right from the start of the game. Belarusian winger Pavel Savitskiy may seem a strange choice for inclusion in this list for some, he’s a potential wonderkid available completely for free though and this isn’t something that you very often come across in Football Manager, not right from the start of the game, anyway. As soon as you load up FM15, offer this young player a contract and if he does decide to join your club then you’ll have yourself a free wonderkid who isn’t even hugely demanding in the wages department either; low cost, low risk, potentially incredibly high reward.

Raheem Sterling (Liverpool)

Probably one of the best young talents in English football right now, Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling is most definitely a player well worth taking a look at in Football Manager 2015. Having only just recently turned 20, Sterling is already an absolutely huge talent in reality and is also well worth a punt in the game as well. Playing as an attacking midfielder/winger, Raheem Sterling is a nice versatile attacking player to have at your disposal that has excelled in the last few years whilst playing for Liverpool and England. Having originally been brought through the QPR youth academy, Sterling has gone from strength to strength since signing for Liverpool and turning professional, and if you’re managing a club with a fairly hefty budget in Football Manager 2015 then it’s definitely worth trying to sign him up.

Youri Tielemans (Anderlecht)

At just 17 years old, Youri Tielemans is a young player causing quite a stir in reality due to the impact that he’s able to have upon a game at such a young age. Tielemans emerged from the Anderlecht youth academy in 2013, making his Champions League début at the age of 16 and looking a very strong player in the Belgian Pro League throughout the 2013-14 season. Tielemans is a very highly regarded player in reality, a player that looks the part right now, let alone being a fantastic prospect for the future. Tielemans is a player that you should 100% make it your mission to sign in Football Manager 2015; the young Belgian central midfielder will no doubt go far in the future as he continues to make a success of himself in reality, and in FM15 it’s very likely that if you do decide to sign him up within the game then he’ll go on to become one of the very best central midfielders within the game.

Top 10 FM15 Wonderkid Strikers

Paco Alcácer (Valencia)

Although 20 years old at the start of Football Manager 2015, Paco Alcácer turned 21 in August 2014 and is therefore one of the older players featured here. As Alcácer is already 21 years old, this therefore means that he’s already more or less the finished article and would therefore be a solid investment if you need a striker that can fit snugly into the first team squad right from the start of the game. Alcácer definitely isn’t blessed with the greatest of pace, he’s incredibly brave and his finishing is excellent, however, and with excellent heading and penalty taking attributes as well, Paco Alcácer would definitely be a very solid striker to have at your disposal in Football Manager 2015.

Gabriel Barbosa (Santos)

Seen in Brazil as somewhat of a new Neymar, Gabriel Barbosa is a young Brazilian striker that should certainly pique your interest in Football Manager 2015. Wanted in reality by some of the top clubs in the world, Gabriel Barbosa is blessed with a great amount of pace and ability, and at just 17 years old at the start of the game he therefore has plenty of development still to come which should see him develop into an absolute superstar of a player. Gabriel Barbosa will not be cheap in Football Manager 2015, if you’re managing a club with a pretty hefty budget though then it’s definitely worth taking a look at this young Brazilian as he has the potential to become one of the very best forwards in world football.

Carlos Fernández (Sevilla)

Much like Paco Alcácer, Sevilla’s Carlos Fernández is another young Spanish striker that may not have a huge amount of pace, yet certainly has very good ability in the finishing department. He has very good jumping reach and heading ability, and as he’s only 18 years old he therefore has plenty of development to come in the future as well. Carlos Fernández is quite similar in many ways to Paco Alcácer, so if you’re looking for a player like Alcácer but don’t mind waiting a few years for them to develop, Carlos Fernández may be a good player to consider as a cheaper option to the more complete Alcácer.

Carlos Fierro (Chivas)

Carlos Fierro first shot to prominence in Football Manager 2012 as one of the very best strikers that the game had to offer, fast forward to FM15 and the young striker is still going strong as one of the very best young wonderkids in the game. Fierro seems to have been kicking around for a very long time now, he’s still only 20 years old though and is still playing for Chivas out in Mexico; Fierro is an absolutely fantastic player to sign up in Football Manager 2015, he won’t blow your entire budget yet he might just become one of the very best players that your club has to offer. Fierro should be a pretty affordable target for most clubs and if you can sign this young Mexican up then I definitely highly recommend doing so.

Luka Jovic (Red Star)

Luka Jovic can perhaps be seen as this year’s Richairo Zivkovic; he’s only on a youth contract at Red Star and can therefore be snapped up for a very small fee, making him one of the best bargains that Football Manager 2015 has to offer. Zivkovic signed for Ajax in the summer and is therefore not the cheap wonderkid option that he once was, Jovic is certainly a player well worth taking a look at for a cheap punt at a potential future world beater though, a 16 year old striker that is incredibly well rounded and should improve massively in the future.

Munir (Barcelona)

Seen by some as the next Messi, Munir is a young attacker with a great amount of technical ability that should see him go on to have an absolutely fantastic career in football. Munir really does have a huge amount of potential for the future, and having already progressed his way up to the Spanish national team, the future certainly looks to be incredibly bright for Munir. Definitely take a look at Barcelona’s Munir in Football Manager 2015, it may not be particularly easy to persuade Barcelona to part company with this promising young player, if you can convince them to do so though then it’s definitely well worth doing.

Divock Origi (Liverpool)

Liverpool’s Divock Origi was a relative unknown before heading to the World Cup with Belgium in the summer, he’s certainly made a name for himself now, however, earning himself a transfer to Liverpool in the summer from Lille and continuing to establish himself as a Belgian international. Manchester United’s Adnan Januzaj was meant to be the star of the show with Belgium at the World Cup, in truth no one really stepped up massively for the nation though, but Divock Origi nonetheless managed to turn a few heads by scoring in the tournament and showing signs that he may well be be a player to watch out for in the future. Definitely take a look at Divock Origi in Football Manager 2015, he starts out on loan at Lille and you therefore won’t be able to snap him up right from the start, keep an eye on him and watch how he develops though and you may just be able to steal him away from Liverpool at some stage in the future.

Timo Werner (Stuttgart)

With superb finishing and a great amount of speed, Stuttgart’s Timo Werner was one of the stand out youth strikers in Football Manager 2014, and once again looks like a fantastic player to sign in Football Manager 2015. Werner has a fantastic youth record with Germany, scoring well at all levels from the Under-15s right through to the Under-19s. Werner seems to be progressing well in reality and if you can sign him up in FM15 then you should have yourself a real talent on your hands for the future.

James Wilson (Manchester United)

Young James Wilson looks to be one of the brightest prospects in English football right now, a young striker with a huge amount of pace and ability that surely has a huge career ahead of him in football. James Wilson was given a chance at the end of the 2013-14 season with Manchester United, scoring two goals on his full league début as he announced himself to the world in fantastic style. Wilson continues to be given opportunities to impress in the 2014-15 season under the management of Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford, with the experienced Dutch manager clearly seeing something in the young striker that he likes a lot. Wilson was a real prospect in FM14 towards the end of the game and once again looks to be a player well worth signing up in Football Manager 2015.

Richairo Zivkovic (Ajax)

Richairo Zivkovic was a real prospect of a player in Football Manager 2014, a cheap striker that would potentially go on to become an absolute world beater of a player. In FM15 Zivkovic is once again a striker well worth picking up, he joined Ajax in the summer, however, and is therefore not the absolute bargain of a forward that he once was. If you want to pick Zivkovic up in Football Manager 2015 then you’re probably going to have to wait a while due to the fact that he has only just recently transferred to Ajax, if you do manage to snap him up then he’ll no doubt be a very impressive signing for you though and in real-life too he is definitely a player well worth watching out for in the future.

When I think of slasher movie killers the first three names that always spring to mind are those of Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, and the mighty Michael Myers. ‘Halloween’ and ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ are in fact two of my absolute favourite horror films of all time. The late 70s/early 80s was a great time for slasher horror, in the 90s there was somewhat of a resurgence in the popularity of the genre however due to Wes Craven’s smash hit ‘Scream’. Craven was of course the director of ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ also and is a very well established name in the slasher horror genre.

I shall here look at the issue of slasher horror killers through the ages and take a look at some of the lesser known slashers as well as the more established names. There’s nothing I love more than a good slasher film, sadly however good slasher horror films are pretty hard to come by these days and the majority that are made tend to be utter bilge.

The Start of the Slasher Horror Genre

The start of the slasher genre can officially be traced back to the seventies; a decade in which such films as ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ and ‘Halloween’ were released; the real start of the genre can perhaps actually be seen to have came with the release of ‘Psycho’ in 1960 though. Remember the shower scene? How could you forget. If you’ve seen ‘Psycho’ then you’ll know that scene and you’ll recognise its effect on the unfolding of the slasher horror genre.

‘Psycho’ is not a slasher film, the shower scene surely shaped the future of the genre however and ‘Psycho’ truly is a classic pioneering horror film. It actually features Jamie Lee Curtis mother Janet Leigh as main character Marion Crane. John Carpenter’s ‘Halloween’ is heavily influenced by Hitchcock’s ‘Psycho’, Carpenter even plucks the name Sam Loomis from ‘Psycho’ and uses it as the name of the doctor in his own film. So ‘Psycho’ is very much the film to blame for the emergence of the slasher movie genre, it’s not a slasher movie in itself but Norman Bates certainly has his slasher killer tendencies and was somewhat of a forerunner in the slasher killer scene.

Norman Bates; the man that pioneered the movement. Many films would follow, ‘Psycho’ is the one that all future films would look to however and draw their inspiration from. It all started at the dawn of the sixties; a decade in which drugs were consumed by many, and gratuitous sex was had by all. Alfred Hitchcock was a great man, it’s now nearly 30 years since his death in 1980 but his influence upon modern cinema is still incredibly profound.

Seventies Slashers

Two of the greatest slasher films of the 70s are those of ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ and ‘Halloween’ also. Directed by Tobe Hooper, ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ is a 1974 film which centres around an old slaughterhouse and a group of teenagers venturing where they really shouldn’t. Leatherface is the chainsaw wielding lunatic you see before you here and his family also all live with him within the Texan slaughterhouse. John Carpenter’s 1978 classic ‘Halloween’ on the other hand is the film which brought life to the Michael Myers character that we’ve all come to know and love over the years. At the age of six; Michael kills his sister and never does he speak again. He’s institutionalised and spends the rest of his days in absolute silence, apparently plotting his one day return to Haddonfield.

The 70s was the start of slasher horror really, these two films really helped to further the genre and assist in its progression; there were of course many other slasher horror movies created throughout the 70s but ‘Halloween’ and ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ are my personal favourites.

I’ve set the scene of the serious seventies slashers and I shall now attempt to look a little more in depth at the characters which made the seventies so special in the world of slasher horror. Michael Myers is my favourite slasher of all time, his character was revisted by Rob Zombie in 2007 and I loved his take on the character also; it’ll always be John Carpenter’s Michael Myers that I love the most though as it’s the original and in my opinion is still the very best.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre Pop Vinyl - Leatherface

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’s Leatherface

Leatherface is a happy go lucky chainsaw maniac that lives cheerfully in his slaughterhouse home with his Grandpa and his two brothers. Leatherface wears a mask made entirely out of human skin, he has messy hair and is really quite evil looking. He and the rest of his family are all cannibals, they love to ear human flesh and are happy in the way that they live.

Leatherface is not the scariest of slasher killers, he is however one of the craziest, and with his chainsaw utilising tendencies he’s definitely a little on the unpredictable side. If you were invited around to Leatherface’s house to have dinner then you could rest assured that you would be the dinner. He’s a filthy cannibal and there are many a great scene in ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ which truly do showcase Leatherface at his finest.

My favourite scene involving Leatherface is the one at the end of the first film where he swings his chainsaw around in every which direction out of absolute frustration. Things haven’t gone quite his way and he shows his lack of sanity through his erratic behaviour here. It’s a great scene and one which I shall always hold incredibly fond memories of. Leatherface is extremely useful with his chainsaw, it’s his weapon of choice and don’t you forget it.

Halloween’s Michael Myers

I love the character of Michael Myers, seriously love it and own on DVD each and every one of the ‘Halloween’ sequels which have followed since the original in 1978. There’s something very spooky about Michael Myers, in the way that he walks, in his body language, and in his featureless mask also. There’s also something spookily scary about the ragged nature of his hair, he’s an incredibly unsavoury character and everything about Michael Myers is just supremely unnerving.

At the age of six Michael Myers picks up a knife, puts on a mask, goes upstairs and murders his sister. ‘Halloween’s opening sequence is incredible, we see things from the point of view of Michael and watch as he takes his first victim. We know not why he does it, all we know is that Michael Myers must be a seriously troubled child and to have committed murder (and at such a young age too) that he must be an absolute monster.

When we rejoin Michael Myers it’s now 15 years on and we learn that he hasn’t spoken since the event of killing his sister. He shows no emotion, he’s an absolute monster, and still he has an unhealthy obsession with masks. He sets out to return to Haddonfield and wreak havoc on the town in which he spent the first six years of his life.

Michael Myers is a horrible character, truly spooky in his appearance and everything about him is just absolutely perfect. Watching the ‘Halloween’ commentary you learn that the featureless mask was not the first they decided upon. There were clown masks and all sorts which were considered, they finally settled with the plain white mask however as it is so spooky to see a killer that shows no emotion and who’s mask is even completely blank. It’s perfect, fantastic use of props were made within ‘Halloween’ and everything about the Micahel Myers character is masterminded to absolute perfection.

Eighties Slashers

The eighties brought to life some of my favourite slasher killers of all time. Movies such as ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’, ‘Child’s Play’, and ‘Friday the 13th’ were brought out during this decade and all of them I absolutely adore. ‘My Bloody Valentine’ is another film to have arrived during the 80s; it’s name was later taken by a hugely important alternative rock band and is another which really must be seen as one of the key slasher movies of the 1980s.

The eighties was the most productive decade for slasher films, they were hugely popular during this period in history; horror has always been a hugely commercially successful genre, horror trends change throughout the ages however and the eighties was without doubt the hey-day of the teen slasher movie. I lose count of the number of eighties slasher films I’ve seen through the years; ‘April Fool’s Day’ is another great one, the actual eighties slashers that I love the most are however Freddy Krueger, Chucky, and Jason Voorhees.

Freddy Krueger Funko Pop

A Nightmare On Elm Street’s Freddy Krueger

‘Whatever you do; don’t fall asleep’. That’s the tag line for the hit 1984 smash ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’. The reason for this? Freddy Krueger is a killer that can only kill you whilst you sleep. He preys on teenagers and the only way to definitely avoid him is not to sleep. The problem with that though is that sleep deprivation eventually results in death, so the safest option is probably actually to sleep here on the off chance that Freddy might not get you. Play by Robert Englund, Freddy Krueger is a great slasher killer and one that I have always really warmed too. The character was ruined a little in later films through giving him cheesy one liners to speak, the original is however an absolute classic and one which I still thoroughly enjoy watching right to this very day.

Freddy Krueger is definitely one of Wes Craven’s finest characters, he’s an undead slasher killer and has a trademark clawed glove. His skin is severely scarred as a result of burns he suffered whilst alive, he’s a monstrous looking man and one that you really don’t want to meet whilst you sleep. He wears a Dennis the Menace style red and black striped jersey and a black cowboy hat also. His way of dress is quite bizarre, his killing fashion also is incredibly disgusting and his hit list even includes Johnny Depp. ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ was Johnny Depp’s first ever film, he’s also one of Krueger’s first victims and is killed in one of my favourite horror sequences of all time. Freddy Krueger is horrible to look at and disgusting in the way that he works also; he’s a vile man and his serial killing ways truly are revolting.

Freddy Krueger is a classic icon of a slasher killer and one which I’m sure many have seen in action over the years. I love the Freddy Krueger characters and along with Halloween’s Michael Myers he’s another definite slasher movie favourite of mine.

Child’s Play’s Chucky

There’s nothing scarier than dolls; no really, I find them really quite petrifying. There’s something really rather sinister about dolls, something about their smiles which always makes me think that the film ‘Child’s Play’ might have been onto something. Chucky is a red headed murderous toy doll; his weapon of choice is the knife and he truly is a fiendish little doll. He’s meant to be cute and cuddly, a standard child’s toy doll which talks and has special catchphrases – he’s more than that though and truly he’s a cold-blooded killer.

Chucky is bought as a child’s birthday present, some present he turns out to be as he begins his rampage and starts to annihilate all those that stand in his way. He’s an evil little doll, absolute pure evil and his features truly are quite frightening. As I’ve already said; I find dolls quite frightening at the best of times, there’s something extra specially disgusting about Chucky though which makes him stand out from the crowd. He has an evil freckled face, crazy red hair, and a horrid personality to boot.

Think ‘Toy Story’ and the evil neighbour Sid who destroys toys for fun, think ten times worse than that however and you get somewhere close to the evil of Chucky. ‘Toy Story’ is a pleasant family film, ‘Child’s Play’ however is not and Chucky is a far-cry from Woody and Buzz Lightyear. Chucky has the soul of evil killer Charles Lee Ray, voodoo magic has been used to transfer his soul being into the doll and this doll therefore possesses the great evil of Charles Lee Ray himself. It’s a fun film, Chucky is a great killer and the murderous doll idea really works incredibly well here.

Friday the 13th’s Jason Voorhees

Jason Voorhees is the masked killer from the Friday the 13th film series. He’s a hockey mask wearing, machete wielding mad man mass murderer and one which has been utilised in a number of different films throughout the years. In 2003 two of horrors favourite slasher killers actually crossed paths for the ‘Freddy vs. Jason’ film which pitted Jason Voorhees against A Nightmare On Elm Street’s Freddy Krueger. Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees are both absolute slasher movie icons and to see them both together in the same film truly was terrific.

Jason is one of the true horror greats, he’s not one of my favourites but still one of the very first I think of when it comes to slasher killers. Jason Voorhees is as evil and murderous as they come, all slasher movie killers tend to be completely psychopathic and Vorhees is certainly no exception to this rule. He’s an unafraid giant of a man, a true monster and horror movie masterpiece of a character originally played by Ari Lehman way back in 1980 (Mrs Voorhees was played by Betsy Palmer, and Kevin Bacon also features here in one of his first roles in a feature film).

Nineties Slashers

In the nineties, interest in the genre of slasher horror was renewed when master of horror Wes Craven brought about his ‘Scream’ series. Three ‘Scream’ films were made throughout the nineties and the trilogy was then complete; ‘Scream’ itself is actually a parody of the whole slasher genre whilst remaining scary as a movie in itself. It’s self-aware and makes reference to horror movie conventions, hinting at how the film will progress and drawing upon such horror conventions as the virgin/whore dichotomy, and also the idea that you should never say ‘I’ll be right back’; it’ll only ever end in tears. ‘Scream’ was the main slasher success of the nineties, there was no specific slasher killer however and with each of the three films the slasher killer itself always changed. Although the killer changed the costume did not and there’s therefore another visually recognisable slasher killer to have emerged from the 90s.

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ (or IKWYDLS) is another film to have gained a great deal of popularity in the 1990s. It has so far spawned two sequels and a fourth IKWYDLS film is planned for 2008 with a working title of ‘The Fisherman’. IKWYDLS is nowhere near as strong as ‘Scream’; it’s okay, definitely not as entertaining as any of the ‘Scream’ films though and by far the weakest of the two most popular nineties slasher movies.

The nineties also saw a return to form for the Michael Myers ‘Halloween’ series with the release of ‘Halloween H20′. Twenty years on from the original and Jamie Lee Curtis once more stars here as Myers sister. It’s a great film, one of my very favourites in the ‘Halloween’ series and I’m so glad that Jamie Lee Curtis decided to feature in this one. Josh Hartnett and Michelle Williams also appear here, it’s a great film and which really helped to renew public interest in the Michael Myers character which had long since turned stale at this point.

‘Urban Legend’ is another slasher film which is well worth mentioning here; it’s not exactly a great film but definitely worth a glancing mention nonetheless. It was quite a popular film in 1998 and although incredibly contrived; if you’re a fan of the slasher movie genre then this is another that will probably float your boat. Go into the film without any particular expectations and I’m sure you’ll at least enjoy the film anyway even if you don’t necessarily love it.

Ghostface Pop Vinyl

Scream’s Killer

Scream’s killer seems to be quite a popular one in that over the years I have seen many a person use the Scream killers mask as their halloween outfit of choice. Scream’s ghostface is just one of those iconic slasher movie masks which will no doubt be utilised by many for years to come. There’s something distinctly disturbing about the Scream mask, it’s just horrible and Wes Craven did an absolutely magnificent job in the creation of this one. ‘Scary Movie’ would of course later copy this mask, creating a stoned version of it also (another which would later be sold in abundance around Halloween time).

Scream’s killer changes from film to film, the costume is always the same though; a black cloak, and the default Scream mask also. I guess that the best way to describe the Scream mask is that it’s Wes Craven’s representation of the grim reaper; this killer is the bringer of death and to me the mask looks very much like Craven’s perception of what the Grim Reaper would/should look like.

Scream’s killer is also known as ‘ghostface’ due to the white nature of the face and black abyss of the eyes/mouth. This is a serious serial killer and the weapon of choice here is that of the hunting knife. Weapons may vary of course, when it comes to slasher movies the serial killers usually have their favoured weapon, but when moving in for the kill will generally make sure the murder is carried out through any means possible.

IKWYDLS Killer

The killer in IKWYDLS wears a rain mac and a black hat also. He dresses in fisherman’s clobber an can always be found to be lurking in the shadows. You never see his face and due to the nature of his clothing his whole body is basically masked in absolute obscurity. I guess part of the killers appeal and fright is that he is so anonymous and you never truly get to see what he looks like. It’s not a great film, the concept for the killer is pretty cool though and although the IKWYDLS fisherman is no slasher movie killer classic; the killers is still pretty well presented and the film is a good bit of fun as a result.

Orginally I Know What You Did Last Summer was written as a novel, it’s impossible to say that this is a movie adaptation however as aside from the name and a few tiny similarities the two are completely different. Whether or not the films killer is similar to that spoken about in the novel I just don’t know; having never read the novel, all I know is what I’ve read and it has been said by all that the novel and film are very different indeed.

Noughties Slashers

I hate to coin the term the ‘noughties’, having used this format up until this point however then it’d be a shame to stop now. Here are some of my favourites that have so far been visited/re-visited throughout this decade that is the 2000s (or noughties, should you so prefer it).

My favourite slasher of the 2000s was Rob Zombie’s Michael Myers. He added greater depth to the original character and offered a story in order to help us understand and appreciate a little more about the troubled wild child that is Michael Myers. His reimaging of ‘Halloween’ is absolutely excellent, I love Rob Zombie’s 2007 take on the film and feel that the angle that he took with it is absolutely exceptional. It’s hard to compare the original to the remake and suggest as to which is better, they’re both very different films and Rob Zombie’s ‘Halloween’ is roughly 50% original story which truly is incredibly good to see. He wasn’t afraid to chop and change the original, shift the perspective and explore places we’d never seen looking into before. ‘Halloween 2007′ is a great remake, and Rob Zombie’s Michael Myers is yet another classic slasher movie character.

Another great revisiting to have emerged in this decade is that of the ‘Freddy vs. Jason’ film which came out in 2003. All three of my favourite slasher killers have had a 2000s outing and I personally have absolutely lapped it up. ‘Freddy vs. Jasson’ is no classic, it’s quite fun though and is great to see these two slasher icons tackling each other in a bid for absolute horror killer glory. Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees are two great characters, it was a smooth move putting these two together and this 2003 release is therefore really quite special.

‘The Slaughterhouse Massacre’ is a 2000s slasher which reminded me of the good old glory days of slasher cinema. Killer Marty Sickle reminds me of a cross between Freddy Krueger and Leatherface, with flashes of Michael Myers thrown into the mix also. It’s a bit of a weird one, no slasher classic but one that is midly entertaining if you’re a massive fan of the slasher film genre. ‘The Slaughterhouse Massacre’ has a UK title of ‘Sickle, personally I prefer the name The Slaughterhouse Massacre though and feel that they probably should have left it as it was all around the world. It’s a low budget film, imperfect and contrived, a copycat of the classic; still quite fun though and bizarrely entertaining to watch in a way.

Rob Zombie’s Michael Myers

Rob Zombie puts to film perfectly the Michael Myers character. His version of Michael Myers is very different to the original, equally excellent however and always here the killer is supreme in his role. There is young Michael (with which we spend roughly half the film), and then there is the older Michael as the original story kicks in and Rob Zombie’s ‘Halloween’ recreates the original movie in his own style.

Young Michael Myers is played out here by the young actor Daeg Faerch, he plays the part well and really puts across the characters evil strongly. Full credit to Daeg Faerch for making Rob Zombie’s ‘Halloweeen’ so special, he’s a great little performer and really puts himself across well as an actor throughout the first half of Zombie’s remake. Were it not for the excellent acting of Daeg Faerch then the first half of the film just wouldn’t have worked, it does though and the young guy here shows himself to be a highly talented actor and is definitely one to watch for the future.

Adult Michael Myers is pretty much the same here as he was in the original; Tyler Mane takes the mask and plays out the pure evil Myers in excellent fashion. He has no spoken lines, it’s a lot easier a task for him to play Myers than it is for Daeg Faerch; he doesn’t have to do a lot acting wise, his body language is good though and he really plays his serial killer part promisingly.

Rob Zombie puts a nice little spin on the Myers character, uses masks and costume in much the same way as the original; plot wise however the differences made by Zombie here really help us engage with Michael Myers and interact with him on a far more personal level. Some will argue that what made the original Michael Myers so great was the fact that there was no reason for his actions and this therefore made the original film far harder hitting in its impact; personally I like the take that Zombie has taken however and feel that it works incredibly well. A great new spin on a classic slasher movie character.

The Slaughterhouse Massacre’s Marty Sickle

For the most part here I’ve concentrated on slasher movie killers that many will be familiar with. The reason I’ve chosen a relative unknown for my final analysis? Basically to show what the slasher genre has come to in the 2000s. This decade we’ve had a retold version of ‘Halloween’, two slasher classics have locked heads in ‘Freddy vs. Jason’, and aside from this there hasn’t really been a popular slasher movie to speak of. ‘Hostel’ contains some brutally gory slasher-esque scenes, it’s definitely not a slasher though and the new age of horror cinema has little interest in the slasher genre made so popular in the 1980s. Marty Sickle is a classic example of what slasher cinema has come to in the 2000s; rehashing what has all been done before in the past.

Marty Sickle is a poor man’s Freddy Krueger on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre location. He’s taken Leatherface’s breeding ground and has been hashed together in incredibly similar fashion to many of the slasher movie greats of years gone by. Marty Sickle is a slasher classic clone, the slasher movie genre has seemingly completely run out of momentum and all directors can now think to do is create low budget copycat productions of some of their favourite films. It’s even actually set in Texas, Marty Sickle is one of the poorest slasher movie killers I’ve ever had the misfortune of witnessing in action and the character is actually played out by the movies director Paul Gagné (under the name of Paul Cagney for some strange reason).

Marty Sickle is certainly no slasher movie icon, it certainly shows what the genre has sunk to in this day and age however and the slasher glory days are now all but a distant memory. Perhaps some day interest in the genre shall be revived; for now however it looks as though other forms of horror movie shall certainly be taking over.

Top 10 Pop-Punk Bands of All Time

January 1, 2015 by Rich Leave a Comment

For many years now pop-punk has been one of my very favorite musical genres. I’ve attended many pop punk gigs throughout the years and have also listened to a huge amount of pop-punk albums. I love pop punk to such a huge extent that I’ve even set up my own pop punk website! I hope that my love for the genre shines through here as I compile my list of the bands that I personally perceive to be the top 10 pop punk bands of all time.

So then, read on to find out the 10 bands that I personally believe to be the best pop-punk bands of all time. If I was compiling a list of purely ‘punk’ bands then this list would obviously have a very different feel to it, this however is a list of the best bands of the pop-punk genre, so read on, have fun, and I hope you enjoy the list that I have here compiled of the top 10 pop punk bands of all time.

blink-182 - Neighborhoods

1. blink-182

Topping my list is without a shadow of a doubt blink-182. blink-182 work the pop-punk image to perfection; their look is great and their music also simply sensational. There are many excellent pop-punk bands out there that I absolutely love; blink-182 has released so many fantastic albums of pop-punk over the years though that they are in my humble opinion fully deserving of the ‘Best Pop Punk Band of All Time’ tag. blink-182’s ‘Enema of the State’ album is in my opinion the best that the band has ever released, it’s the finest pop-punk album I’ve ever heard and how fitting that this be the case for what I personally consider to be the best pop-punk band of all time. Tracks such as ‘What’s My Age Again’, ‘Dumpweed’, and ‘Anthem’ never fail to make me smile, ‘Enema of the State’ is a great album; a five star release for sure and one that is more than worthy of inclusion in the personal music collections of all.

It is my belief that blink-182 has never released a bad album, the band was originally active between the years of 1992 and 2005; in that time a grand total of five full length studio albums were released, all of which were absolutely excellent and never did the bands music disappoint. ‘Enema of the State’ is the bands most commercially successful album and this is for good reason too, the latter four of the bands five albums during their first spell went at least Platinum however and this I feel was an absolutely excellent achievement on the behalf of blink-182. The blink-182 studio album discography is as follows:

– Cheshire Cat (1994)
– Dude Ranch (1997)
– Enema of the State (1999)
– Take off Your Pants and Jacket (2001)
– blink-182 (2003)
– Neighbourhoods (2012)

During the extended hiatus of blink-182 the bands members went on to form two separate bands; the bands guitarist Tom DeLonge formed the alternative rock band Angels & Airwaves whilst Travis Barker and Mark Hoppus continued to pursue the pop-punk dream with +44. +44 was only active for 4 years between 2005 and 2009, with the band going on hiatus when blink-182 reformed in 2009. Although +44 ceased to exist once blink-182 had reformed however, Tom Delonge continues to concentrate on both Angels & Airwaves and blink-182, and Angels & Airwaves have to date released a total of four studio albums.

Since reforming in 2009, blink-182 has gone on to release another album, ‘Neighbourhoods’ in 2011, and the band continues to be an absolute driving force in pop-punk. The band may not be to everyone’s tastes, I for one absolutely love them however and feel that as far as pop-punk goes, blink-182 is absolutely the ultimate band.

Ramones

2. Ramones

You’ll notice here that my number one and number two choices are very different indeed; both bands are ones that I personally would consider to be ‘Pop Punk’ and yet the music the two create is vastly different. The Ramones was one of the very first punk rock bands; the band was started by Dee Dee, Johnny, and Joey; over the years many other people made up that fourth remaining Ramone slot on the drums. Marky Ramone was the Ramones drummer in the main, there were however several spells when he was not featured as a part of the band.

The Ramones truly is a highly influential pop punk band, over the years the band has been an influence to many and was in fact one of the very first bands that got me into the whole spectrum of pop punk and in fact punk rock music on the whole. Sadly the original three members of The Ramones are all now dead; Joey Ramone was the first to pass away in 2001, Dee Dee Ramone followed shortly after in 2002 and lastly Johnny Ramone sadly left this world in 2004. It’s sad that the bands three original members are now all dead, it’s a weird one that even in their passing they were all so close together too; The Ramones was an excellent band, a close friendship of musicians and a whole musical family of Ramones. The following is a list of albums the band released between their active years of 1974 and 1996:

– Ramones (1976)
– Leave Home (1977)
– Rocket to Russia (1977)
– Road to Ruin (1978)
– End of the Century (1980)
– Pleasant Dreams (1981)
– Subterranean Jungle (1983)
– Too Tough to Die (1984)
– Animal Boy (1986)
– Halfway to Sanity (1987)
– Brain Drain (1989)
– Mondo Bizarro (1992)
– Acid Eaters (1993)
– ¡Adios Amigos! (1995)

For those not familiar with the work of The Ramones then I thoroughly suggest giving the bands music a listen; you’ll surely not be disappointed as they truly were a highly talented bunch of musicians and never did the music disappoint. Always the bands sound was packed full of energy, always may ‘Blitzkrieg Pop’ remain to be one of my favourite songs of all time and forever may the music of The Ramones remain close to my heart.

Descendents - Everything Sucks

3. Descendents

Whilst Descendents is a band that has actually been going since 1978, due to numerous hiatuses the band has actually been inactive about as much as it has been active. As such, the band has only released 6 studio albums since 1978, despite the small number of albums across a long period of time however, Descendents is still a band that has built up a hugely loyal following over the years, and for very good reason too.

Descendents create intelligently constructed punk-rock tracks, and are one of the leading names in modern pop punk music. Whilst not everyone may consider Descendents to be a purely pop-punk band, they are certainly a band that have helped shape the feel and sound of the genre, and are therefore I feel a very worthy inclusion in this list of the top ten pop punk bands of all time.

The following is a full discography of the Descendents albums released to date:

– Milo Goes to College (1982)
– I Don’t Want to Grow Up (1985)
– Enjoy! (1986)
– All (1987)
– Everything Sucks (1996)
– Cool to Be You (2004)

As well as being an absolutely awesome frontman, Descendents’ lead vocalist Milo Aukerman also holds a doctorate in biochemistry, and concentrated on his education during one of the band’s several hiatuses throughout the years. Milo’s concentration on his University education is noted in the title of the band’s debut studio album ‘Milo Goes to College’.

The band is currently working on a documentary, however as yet there are no plans set in stone to release a seventh studio album.

Offspring - Smash

4. The Offspring

For more than a decade now I have loved the music of The Offpsring. My eldest brother had the bands ‘Smash’ album on CD and from an early age I was therefore exposed to the sweet sound of the voice of Dexter Holland. ‘Smash’ was the bands breakthrough album, their third studio album and one that saw its official release in 1994. The album comes complete with a number of smash hits such as the excellent ‘Bad Habit’, the fantastic ‘Gotta Get Away’, and the pounding beat of ‘Come Out and Play (Keep ‘Em Separated)’ also. Every track from the ‘Smash’ album is excellent, never is there a dull moment, and always the sound created by the band is here absolutely excellent.

The band has so far released nine studio albums to date, the latest of which being ‘Days Go By’ which was released in June 2012. ‘Smash’ is still the band’s most commercially successful studio album to date, having gone 6x Platinum in both the USA and Canada, and 4x Platinum in Australia, 1998s ‘Americana’ album isn’t too far behind however and is certified 5x Platinum in both Australia and the USA, an incredible 8x Platinum in Canada, and is certified Platinum in the UK also, the only of the band’s album’s to have done so in the UK.

The following is a full discography of Offspring studio albums to have been released to date:

– The Offspring (1989)
– Ignition (1992)
– Smash (1994)
– Ixnay on the Hombre (1997)
– Americana (1998)
– Conspiracy of One (2000)
– Splinter (2003)
– Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace (2008)
– Days Go By (2012)

Nine excellent pop punk albums is a pretty hard task to manage, The Offspring is a band that has done it however and long may they continue to release fantastic albums of music. The Offspring is a band ranked third in my personal list, it’s a band that has influenced many and was in fact one of the key bands in the punk revival of the early 1990s along with other such bands as Green Day and Rancid also. Green Day’s ‘Dookie’ album was also released in 1994; another excellent album but in my opinion ‘Smash’ should always be regarded as the ultimate pop punk album of 1994.

Green Day - American Idiot

5. Green Day

Green Day is a band that has been going now since 1987, the band has been around for over twenty years and still the sound is going strong. ‘American Idiot’ was a huge commercial success in 2004, I personally wasn’t a fan of this release but know of plenty that are. My main interest is in the early music of Green Day, albums such as ‘Kerplunk’, ‘Dookie’, and ‘Insomniac’; ‘Insomniac’ is in fact my favourite album that Green Day has ever released and a release that even to this day I am still hugely fond of. Green Day is another pop punk band that has been a massive influence to many, millions of the bands records have been sold all around the world over the years and although the pop punk sound this band creates is incredibly basic it is still one that has mass appeal.

Over the years the Green Day sound has progressively changed and altered, the band has tried out various different angles such as with the folk rock approach of ‘Warning’ but ultimately the bands biggest success has always come when Green Day has stuck to creating simple catchy pop punk tunes. 2004 was a big year for Green Day, they released a huge commercial success in the form of ‘American Idiot’ and also played to packed out venues all around the world. It’s been a great journey for Green Day getting to where they are today, the bands music has influenced many and I personally once regarded Green Day to be my favourite pop punk band. Over the years I have heard many pop punk bands and come to realise that Green Day are not necessarily the best band of their kind, they are however quite a talented three-piece and to date have the following studio albums under their belt:

– 39/Smooth (1990)
– Kerplunk (1992)
– Dookie (1994)
– Insomniac (1995)
– Nimrod (1997)
-Warning (2000)
– American Idiot (2004)
– 21st Century Breakdown (2009)
– ¡Uno! (2012)
– ¡Dos! (2012)
– ¡Tre! (2012)

For those that are not yet familiar with the work of Green Day then I’d highly recommend investing in the bands ‘Insomniac’ album, this I feel is the bands strongest ever album and is the one that I personally have derived the most musical satisfaction from listening to. Green Day is a brilliant band fully deserving of their place in this list, over the years Green Day has churned out some terrific musical releases and success came for the band with the release of 1994s ‘Dookie’. Although ‘Insomniac’ was not so well received as ‘Dookie’ I do still feel that this is the ultimate Green Day album to give a listen to; it’s a fine release of music packed full of raw and energetic pop punk classics. The reason Green Day is at number five in this list? Well, it is my belief that ‘American Idiot’ was an absolutely terrible album and the fact of the matter is that there are a lot of bands far more technically superior to Green Day in this world. Green Day is a good pop punk band, not the best that there is but certainly still a very good one. 2009s ’21st Century Breakdown’ definitely had its moments, it wasn’t all good however, and from what I’ve heard of ‘¡Uno!’ I still feel that the band is severely slumping. Maybe there’s more good stuff to come from the band in the future? Who knows? All I know is that the band has released very few tracks in the last decade that I have actually enjoyed, hence their position in my list a little lower down than you’d perhaps expect.

New Found Glory - New Found Glory

6. New Found Glory

The Floridian pop punk unit New Found Glory has long been a favourite of mine, I’ve seen the band live on several occasions now and always their stage presence and strong musical ability has impressed me hugely. New Found Glory is in my opinion one of the greatest pop punk bands there has ever been, the band has released six studio albums to date and much like most in this list of mine never have their studio releases disappointed. They’ve released a cover album amongst others, always their music is packed full of fun and never is there a dull moment with the fantastic musical releases of New Found Glory. The last release to have emerged from the band was the ‘Tip of the Iceberg’ EP which came out through Bridge Nine Records; it’s an absolutely excellent EP and is I feel one of the finest releases of the year thus far.

Although a pop punk band, the five members of New Found Glory take heavy influence from the genre of hardcore punk and this is therefore a sound that can sometimes permeate within their music. New Found Glory is an absolutely excellent pop punk band, the band has been making music since 1997 and the five members’ tightness as a unit really shines through within the sound. New Found Glory is I feel one of the best bands within its genre, always when the band return with a new release I’m one of the first ones out there making sure that I own the record. So far the band has released the following six studio albums:

– Nothing Gold Can Stay (1999)
– New Found Glory (2000)
– Sticks and Stones (2002)
– Catalyst (2004)
– Coming Home (2006)
– From the Screen to Your Stereo Part II (2007)
– Not Without a Fight (2009)
– Radiosurgery (2011)
– Resurrection (2014)

With each New Found Glory album the voice of the bands front man Jordan Pundik just seems to get better and better, each time the band emerges the sound created seems to be ever stronger and never does New Found Glory ever seem to stop growing in strength. The continued progression of New Found Glory is I feel one of the main reasons that the band is deserving of a place in this list of mine today; the music of New Found Glory is excellent and the fact that it gets so much better with each and every release really is a fantastic quality to hear. Some bands start off good and never really progress much further, this certainly can’t be said of New Found Glory as never does this band seem to stop growing and always in fact the sound created is furthered to even more phenomenal heights of magnificence.

I love the music of New Found Glory, I highly recommend giving a few of their tracks a listen and the truth is that the band has released many an exceptional album over the years. When I think of New Found Glory the first tracks that spring to mind are the following; ‘Hit or Miss’, ‘My Friends Over You’, ‘Dressed to Kill’, and ‘Failure’s Not Flattering’. All four of these tracks are absolutely fantastic, definitely give these a listen and I’m sure that you shall not be disappointed with what you hear.

NOFX - They've Actually Gotten Worse Live

7. NOFX

NOFX is a pop punk band that always has had a loyal fan base of many, over the years the band has released some excellent pieces of music and the greatest NOFX track I can think of is without doubt ‘Timmy the Turtle’. So many fine albums have emerged from NOFX over the years, a few clangers also but on the whole the NOFX sound has been really rather strong. The lyrics are fun, the music tends not to be serious, and when you listen to a NOFX track you can just relax back and have a good laugh as you take in the bands light-hearted lyrics. In 2002 the band joined together with Rancid for the BYO Split Series and each band put to record six songs originally by the other band. Rancid covered such fantastic NOFX tracks as ‘Bob’, ‘Don’t Call Me White’ and ‘Stickin’ In My Eye’, whilst NOFX played out excellent Rancid songs such as ‘Radio’, ‘I’m The One’, and ‘Tenderloin’. Both Rancid and NOFX were similarly important in my personal progression into the world of pop punk, NOFX was always the band that I loved most however and for that reason NOFX must definitely be ranked higher in the list.

When I first started listening to pop punk/punk rock albums it was releases like ‘S&M Airlines’, ‘Punk in Drublic’, and ‘Heavy Petting Zoo’ that appealed to me most. A number of NOFX albums were on constant repeat in my household and never could I listen to enough music from the band. Every second of the day I wanted to spend listening to music, I still do in fact; when I was first entering into the punk rock world it was NOFX albums that shaped my love of the genre however and for this I highly rate the band. The music of NOFX is hugely accessible, the tracks are catchy but the lyrics often convey important messages and morals also. When listening to a NOFX record it’s really quite an educational experience; the music is of an incredibly high quality and the lyrics also really speak out to you and stand out strongly in the bands sound. To date the band has released a total of twelve studio albums and the following are those that have been unleashed upon the world:

– Liberal Animation (1988)
– S&M Airlines (1989)
– Ribbed (1991)
– White Trash, Two Heebs and a Bean (1992)
– Punk in Drublic (1994)
– Heavy Petting Zoo (1996)
– So Long and Thanks for All the Shoes (1997)
– Pump up the Valuum (2000)
– The War on Errorism (2003)
– Wolves in Wolves’ Clothing (2006)
– Coaster (2009)
– Self Entitled (2012)

Over the years there is no doubt in my mind that NOFX is a band that has influenced many, the members of NOFX have been making music together as a band since 1983 and still they seem to be loving it as much as ever. It’s great to see such an enthusiastic and energetic band, it’s refreshing to see a group of individuals still loving making music together after over twenty five years of doing so. Many marriages last far less time than this band has been together, ten albums in and the sound created is still strong and NOFX remains to be a band with plenty to offer. The band is perhaps now past its best, the greatest of the bands albums were now released many years ago but NOFX is a band that I do still feel is thoroughly deserving of a place in this list of the top ten pop punk bands of all time. The music of NOFX is always full of fun, perhaps take the time to listen to an album or two of theirs and then you shall see what I’m talking about here. If I were going to make a recommendation then I’d personally have to pick ‘Punk in Drublic’ or ‘Pump up the Valuum’; give one of these babies a listen and I’m sure that you shall be impressed.

Rancid - And Out Come the Wolves

8. Rancid

It would be wrong to include NOFX here without also thinking of Rancid, both bands are ones that I hold in incredibly high regard and each is definitely deserving of a place here in the top ten. Rancid is I feel one of the best pop punk bands of all time, not all of their music is technically pop punk but they are still a hugely popular punk rock band and many of their best tracks do I feel possess a certain element of pop power. ‘…And Out Come the Wolves’ is without doubt the best example of the music of Rancid, it’s an excellent album from start to finish and never with this one is there ever a dull moment. Tracks from this album include ‘Ruby Soho’, ‘Time Bomb’, and ‘Roots Radicals’ also; all of them are excellent and the album does in fact come complete with a grand total of nineteen fantastic punk rock tracks with a heavy dose of pop and a huge hint of ska. Rancid is a brilliant band, ‘…And Out Come the Wolves’ is the best album and is one that I do in fact recommend all to listen to.

Rancid is a band more than capable of producing a high energy pop hook, the band has displayed some great pop sensibilities over the years and always the music has sounded strong as a direct result of this. Rancid is a brilliant band, I personally owe a lot to the music of Rancid; were it not for bands like Rancid, NOFX and Green Day then I never would have discovered many of the other pop punk/punk rock bands that I am into today. The music of Rancid always is packed full of power, the bands tracks never come without energy and passion; this is something that I love about Rancid as always they sing as though they mean it and never does the music come across as at all false. Rancid is a band that produces real heartfelt tracks, fine musical constructions that provide for a fantastic listening experience that always is full of fun. The band began in 1991 and to date the following studio albums have been recorded and released:

– Rancid (1993)
– Let’s Go (1994)
– …And Out Come the Wolves (1995)
– Life Won’t Wait (1998)
– Rancid (2000)
– Indestructible (2003)
– B Sides and C Sides (2008)
– Let the Dominoes Fall (2009)
– …Honor Is All We Know (2014)

Rancid is I feel a band that should rightfully be included in all lists comprising of the best pop punk bands of all time, it truly is an excellent band; one that has remained interesting and current throughout the years and always with a musical sound that is fresh and vibrant. For those that like their pop punk then the music of Rancid should really be considered as essential listening, ‘..And Out Come the Wolves’ is the best album that the band has ever released, many of the bands albums are strong however and always the bands musical output has much to offer. The guitar riffs always are hugely powerful with the music of Rancid, the bands tracks are full of fun and both vocally and instrumentally also the music is and always has been hugely impressive. Search out ‘…And Out Come the Wolves’, give it a listen and prepare to be amazed; it’s one of the best pop punk albums of all time and Rancid is most definitely one of the greatest pop punk bands of all time.

Sum 41 - All Killer No Filler

9. Sum 41

Sum 41 is a band that started out with a very much pop punk sound, throughout the years the bands music changed and altered but inevitably the band has now returned to its pop punk roots. Always the band has had pop punk elements about the music, the bands debut and breakthrough record ‘All Killer, No Filler’ is however a pop punk release through and through and a supremely strong record it is too. When ‘All Killer, No Filler’ was first released and ‘Fat Lip’ was a massively successful smash hit of a single; me and my brother use to sing and dance along to it in the living room whenever the video for the track came on T.V. There was a strange cross legged dance and a pogoing in the air dance also; the music is full of fun and my brother and I sure had an excellent time dancing along to the bands music.

Since Sum 41 formed in 1996 the band has already achieved an awful lot. First album ‘All Killer, No Filler’ was a high energy pop punk album, second release ‘Does This Look Infected?’ took more of a rock approach and then with the next album the band progressed even further still into the world of metal. With the bands fourth and most recent studio album Sum 41 returned to its pop punk ways, the album is I feel an absolutely excellent construction of music and draws upon all three of the bands previous albums that came beforehand. In four albums Sum 41 is a band that has achieved a huge amount, a great deal of success has come the bands way and this I feel is something that is fully deserved. Sum 41 is a fine pop punk band; the following is a list of the studio albums that have so far been released by the band and the years that these albums emerged:

– All Killer, No Filler (2001)
– Does This Look Infected? (2002)
– Chuck (2004)
– Underclass Hero (2007)
– Screaming Bloody Murder (2011)

It’s interesting that I should include Sum 41 here, neither ‘Does This Look Infected?’ or ‘Chuck’ are really heavily pop punk based albums; they do however contain certain elements of the genre and ‘All Killer, No Filler’ and ‘Underclass Hero’ are I feel excellent pop punk albums. Before the ‘All Killer, No Filler’ album was released a mini-album titled ‘Half Hour of Power’ emerged, to listen to this is basically a demos album for the tracks that would later appear on the bands first album; the tracks present on this release often contain elements of the music that resides within the bands debut release but the tracks are not quite the finished article and still very much in the demo stage. Recording ‘Half Hour of Power’ before ‘All Killer, No Filler’ did I feel benefit the band hugely; when ‘All Killer, No Filler’ was released the album was incredibly strong and it would seem that ‘Half Hour of Power’ was an EP that gave them the opportunity to try a few tracks out and see what worked best and what was most appreciated by the masses. Sum 41 is a band that I feel is thoroughly deserving of its place here in my personal list of the top ten pop punk bands of all time; Sum 41 is a brilliant band and pop punk classics such as ‘Fat Lip’, ‘Motivation’, ‘Underclass Hero’, and ‘In Too Deep’ are tracks that I feel should be heard by all.

Fall Out Boy - American Beauty American Psycho

10. Fall Out Boy

Last but not least, the final band I’m picking for the list is that of Fall Out Boy. I was in two minds over whether or not to include them here, it will not be a popular choice with many but then again there are plenty out there that highly appreciate the supreme pop punk tunes of Fall Out Boy. I personally am a massive fan of the band, I wasn’t to begin with but when Fall Out Boy released the ‘From Under the Cork Tree’ album in 2003 it really appealed to me. ‘Take This to Your Grave’ was the first Fall Out Boy album that I ever heard; other than ‘Grand Theft Autumn/Where Is Your Boy’ the album failed to impress me however and didn’t really go down too well at all with myself. When ‘From Under the Cork Tree’ was released my opinion of the band skyrocketed, it’s an absolutely excellent album and is in fact one of the best pop punk albums of all time in my humble opinion. Tracks such as ‘Dance, Dance’, ‘7 Minutes in Heaven (Atavan Halen)’, and ‘Sugar, We’re Goin Down’ never fail to make me smile; these tracks are excellent and the album on the whole is in fact fantastic from start to finish.

When Fall Out Boy released ‘Infinity on High’ in 2007 they further solidified their place as one of my favourite pop punk bands of all time, once more the bands music impressed me massively and again the band managed to produce an album that was in all respects absolutely flawless. Given the quality of the bands last two albums, Fall Out Boy is a band that had to be in this list of the top ten pop punk bands of all time and were it not for such a dodgy start to the bands musical career then the band would in fact have appeared a lot higher up in this list of mine. The following is a list of the studio albums that Fall Out Boy has released to date:

– Fall Out Boy’s Evening Out with Your Girlfriend (2002)
– Take This to Your Grave (2003)
– From Under the Cork Tree (2005)
– Infinity on High (2007)
– Folie à Deux (2008)
– Save Rock and Roll (2013)
– American Beauty/American Psycho (2015)

Between 2009 and 2013 Fall Out Boy took a hiatus, the band returned in 2013 with a brand new studio album in ‘Save Rock and Roll’, however, and the band has since gone on to follow this up with a new EP as well in the form of ‘PAX AM Days’, a raw 15 minute offering of exciting punk rock music. It was a disappointing day when Fall Out Boy decided to take a hiatus, now that the band is back it feels like they were never away at all though, and it’ll definitely be interesting to see what more this exciting pop-punk can now provide in the future.
