Can You Use Icons in EAFC 24 Career Mode?

September 25, 2023 by Rich Leave a Comment

Since FIFA 20, the annual Soccer Aid charity event has been acknowledged by EA Sports in the form of a Soccer Aid team being available in the rest of the world section in the game.

When the team was first added, it was possible to search for each player individually by name, and transfer them into different teams so that these players could then be used in career mode.

From FIFA 21 onwards, however, although the Soccer Aid team itself has still been featured in the game; it hasn’t been possible to transfer the players, and therefore hasn’t been possible to use them in career mode.

With the change of name for the series though, have things now changed for EA Sports FC 24, and is it now once again possible?

Unfortunately not, no… But you can still use the Soccer Aid team in kick-off mode, enabling you to make use of icons like Cantona, Zidane and Ronaldinho, and test them out prior to investing millions of coins in them in Ultimate Team.

Early hands-on with Monster Hunter Now

September 11, 2023 by Rich Leave a Comment

In the past few weeks I’ve been fortunate enough to get hands-on with Monster Hunter Now, the upcoming new game from Niantic, and it’s genuinely really impressed me with what it has to offer.

Similar to with Pokémon Go; you explore and benefit from interacting with locations in the real world, battling against monsters, with daily quests to keep you interested and engaged.

The combat feels extremely intuitive, and with the monsters that you hunt all having different weaknesses; you’ll frequently find yourself switching between different weapons, which really does help in keeping things feeling varied, fresh and fun.

Monster Hunter Now doesn’t officially launch until September 14th, but it really does feel like they’re onto something with this one. Does it have the staying power of Pokémon Go and will people still be playing this one multiple years down the line? Only time will tell. The Monster Hunter franchise has been in existence for nearly 20 years now though, and there’s definitely a very real possibility that Monster Hunter Now could be here for the long haul.

Everything We Know About EA Sports FC 24 for the Nintendo Switch

July 14, 2023 by Rich Leave a Comment

For the past few years, FIFA fans on the Nintendo Switch have had to settle for a ‘legacy edition’ of their favourite football game, featuring the same gameplay features and modes since FIFA 19, without any new development or significant enhancements.

There had been hope that perhaps things would change for the freshly rebranded EA Sports FC, however, and we do now know that, for the first time in years, the Nintendo Switch version of the game has received some serious upgrades.

For the first time in the series, the game will now be running on the Frostbite Engine, and with that comes the inclusion of PlayStyles optimised by Opta, a brand new addition across all platforms that will provide heightened authenticity in terms of how players look, feel and play.

Volta and Clubs will also both be coming to the Nintendo Switch for the very first time, you’ll be able to develop your own club legends in Ultimate Team with the inclusion of Evolutions (enabling you to complete a set of objectives to improve a players overall rating and help keep them competitive throughout the year), and you’ll also now be able to add women’s footballers to your Ultimate Team squads, creating your dream XI from a mix of both men’s and women’s footballers.

Rivals, Champs and Squad Battles will also all be present in Ultimate Team this year, and all of these various updates and additions should surely help make EA Sports FC 24 for the Nintendo Switch stand out strongly as a substantial upgrade over its predecessors.

EA Sports FC 24 for the Nintendo Switch is officially set for release on September 29th.

Could Skate 4 Be The Best Game In The Series?

April 25, 2023 by Rich Leave a Comment

A new official Board Room video dropped recently, giving us an update on the state of Skate, and what sort of things we can expect from the game when it’s finally released.

They started out by reiterating the point that the game will NOT feature paid loot boxes, they’ve noted that there will be an ever changing and evolving storyline, and have even informed us that there will be some brand new offboard gameplay mechanics that will come complete with their own sets of challenges to help explore the city in different ways than ever before.

To the skateboarding purists of you out there, however, the idea of non skateboarding activities may well seem like an unwanted distraction and you may even feel that the implementation of parkour based challenges could be detrimental to the overall quality of the video game as a whole. As long as they don’t make the non skateboarding side of things too much of a central theme though; it should just give people the freedom to explore the city and express themselves in whatever way they wish, whether that be with their board or otherwise.

So could Skate 4 potentially even be the best game in the series so far?

I feel that the series has evolved with each and every title over the years, and although it’s been 13 years now since Skate 3 was released and it’s natural to feel some degree of apprehension after such a long period without a new game; it seems that the team at Full Circle is understandably taking its time over this one, listening to the feedback and concerns in the community such as with the aforementioned fear that the game could include paid loot boxes, and I for one have faith in the process and trust that this next game can once again push things forward and provide for another point of evolution for the franchise.

Obviously there’s a long way to go yet, the footage that we’re seeing at the moment is still very early on in the process, and it’ll no doubt be a long while yet before we get a real feel for what Skate 4 is truly going to be like; there seem to be some promising signs so far though, and I’ll be choosing to remain hopeful that this game can not only serve to be a gateway into skateboarding for newcomers, but also put a smile on the face of those of us that have been invested in skateboarding and skateboarding games for some time.

Why You Shouldn’t Buy FIFA 23 For The Nintendo Switch

September 5, 2022 by Rich Leave a Comment

When EA started releasing legacy editions of FIFA for the Nintendo Switch back in FIFA 20; the writing was already on the wall that substantial development had ceased and there would more than likely never be any major upgrades for the series ever again.

Fast forward to FIFA 23, EA still persists with the ‘legacy edition’ moniker and kits, clubs, and updated player rosters aside; FIFA 23 for the Nintendo Switch is essentially the same game as FIFA 19 for the Nintendo Switch.

The game retails for £34.99, but comes complete with none of the features that EA have added on other platforms in recent years. There’s no Volta to be found here, no Pro Clubs, and no create a club functionality for career mode. Instead, it looks and plays more like FIFA 16 than any of the more recent offerings in the series.

If you own any of the previous FIFA titles for the Nintendo Switch, or have the ability to play the game on any other platform? FIFA 23 for the Nintendo Switch is probably best avoided.

Hands On With eFootball 2022 – Is It Worth Trying Out?

September 29, 2021 by Rich Leave a Comment

A few weeks back I was invited along to Konami’s European office in Windsor where I was fortunate enough to spend a good couple of hours playing an early build of eFootball 2022.

Whereas the online performance test back in June left me seriously underwhelmed and the trailers that have been released for the game had me rather worried; it was with great relief that this build I had hands-on access to actually left me feeling quite pleasantly surprised.

When you first load into a game, the cut scenes are genuinely impressive, with well detailed player models and licensed stadiums that looked extremely aesthetically pleasing. The atmosphere inside the stadium has clearly been worked on and is thoroughly impressive, and there was also a nice little touch where not only do you see the players entering the pitch in all their glory at the start of the match, but you also see them re-entering the pitch after half-time; a minor detail that really helps increase the realism and immersion.

There are definitely elements of the visuals that aren’t so impressive and the pitch itself for instance isn’t as polished or impressive as it perhaps could be, but I can’t really say that this impacted too much upon my overall enjoyment of the game.

Yes, it needs work, and in time it will surely be improved, but the beauty of the new release style this year will be that this game will be constantly evolving and improving throughout the course of the year. It definitely won’t be the perfect football game when it launches on September 30th, but from what I played, there are some promising signs here that this can and will become a very impressive football game.

And that’s not to say that I think this is going to be a bad game when it initially releases either. Whilst I’m not going to pretend that there isn’t room for improvement; the collision system still needs work for example and in tight spaces the players could sometimes feel a little clunky, but there are also some genuinely really pleasing positives. The game had a really nice pace about it, some of the goals that I scored were incredibly satisfying, and with the ball boys constantly throwing the ball back to you as it leaves the field, there are some silky smooth transitions of play which provided a really nice touch and impressive fluidity to the gameplay.

It’s slower paced than we’re used to, but there’s also an impressive physicality to the game with the new physical defending that’s been introduced for eFootball 2022. You can really use your body shape to help shield the ball, and every physical battle felt incredibly realistic and rewarding to win.

Second man press is gone from the game and there’s definitely going to be a bit of a learning curve adapting to this change of defensive system when you first start playing, but I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. When I first started playing the game, I found my players skidding about all over the place as I then frantically switched players and attempted to recover from my mistakes, but the more I played the game, the more I found myself adapting. It is very different and it’ll take some time getting used to the physical defending and new ways of doing things, but learning these new mechanics is kind of all part of the fun and should help contribute to creating a skill gap when it comes to battling against other human opponents.

And speaking of new mechanics; the build that I had hands on access to did actually include the new sharp kicks, something that unfortunately won’t be in the game for the September 30th launch. What I will say of those though is that they really added an extra dynamic to the gameplay that I personally very much enjoyed. Sharp kicks take longer to execute, so they’re not ideal in every situation, but if you get them right then the payoff is absolutely worth it. Some of the goals I scored using sharp kicks were absolutely stunning, and when they are ultimately introduced to the game they should be a very welcome addition.

So would I recommend giving this game a try? Absolutely! It’s completely free to download. Why wouldn’t you at least give it a few games to see what you think of it?

What I do perceive to be a slight problem though, and where some people will inevitably be lost, will be in the first few months of the game’s life cycle. We’re still a couple of months away from getting hands on with the new creative team mode and there’s also no estimated time of arrival on Master League, so to begin with, this is going to be extremely bare bones and it’s definitely going to take time before the game really begins to start taking shape and showing signs of what it can truly become.

Initially there will only be local matches with nine teams to choose from (Arsenal, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Corinthians, Flamengo, Juventus, Manchester United, Sao Paulo and River Plate), but as stated previously; this game will be a constant work in progress, receiving quality of life upgrades throughout the year that will help improve and enhance it, more modes will be coming, and eventually I can really see eFootball flourishing.

Just try not to be too discouraged when you load up eFootball 2022 tomorrow and in its initial launch form it feels more like a demo than a fully fledged football game.
