Lego Marvel Super Heroes: Universe in Peril Review

December 1, 2013 by Rich Leave a Comment

If you’ve experienced previous games in the Lego franchise, the chances are that playing Lego Marvel Super Heroes: Universe in Peril is going to be a bit of a shock to the system. Gone are the long levels of old, what we are instead provided with is a series of short mission-based blasts as you explore the Marvel universe, unlocking further superheroes in the process.

With plenty of characters to play as and unlock, Lego Marvel Super Heroes: Universe in Peril definitely provides a fun experience in finding out exactly who’s included, the form factor of the levels however is something that is likely to leave fans divided. Whereas in the past a key part of the fun of the Lego game experience has come from exploration and the intrigue of finding out the various items you’re to build to help progress your way through the game, much of this process of exploration has now been taken away as a result of the short level length, and there’s really not much to do at all in terms of building items. Occasionally you will be required to build something, this is something that happens far less frequently than in previous games in the Lego game franchise, however, and it’s disappointing to lose out on much of this area of the game. For those that do a lot of their handheld gaming on the go, the new level format should definitely be of appeal as the short level length is perfect for filling short expanses of time, if you’re more for a longer level length though then this could be an area of disappointment in comparison to other Lego games that you may have played in the past.

There’s definitely a fantastic pick-up-and-play value about Lego Marvel Super Heroes: Universe in Peril; you don’t need to be an advanced level of gamer to get to grips with the controls and there’s no real learning curve with mastering them. There’s no jump functionality which seems a bit strange, with characters such as Iron Man you can though, and with Spider-Man you can use use your web to swing your way through each level. Finding out what each different character can do is always fun and this is definitely a major appeal of the game, the individual levels can feel a bit repetitive, however, and slow loading times when loading up each level can certainly be extremely frustrating.

Keeping the cut scenes from the home console release, the video quality is extremely poor in this handheld release and this is therefore extremely disappointing. Whilst the content of the cut scenes is strong, the fact that the quality of them is awful really detracts from the overall experience, souring an otherwise impressive area of the game. The video quality of the cut scenes is something that really should have been taken into consideration when this game was released, it’s difficult to ignore just how poor they look, and although you always want to watch them to the end to find out how the story of the game is progressing, the extremely low quality makes it incredibly tempting to skip them and avoid the frustration of just how bad they look, especially on the 3DS XL’s larger screen.

Graphically the game is solid, it’s obviously not as crisp and beautiful looking as you’ll find on the home console version, for a handheld release it definitely looks pretty decent though, and if you’ve played and enjoyed the look of previous games in the franchise for handheld then you should appreciate the aesthetic sheen of this title.

This is a game that has many areas for criticism, and compared to its home console counterpart it really does have many drawbacks. The poor quality cut scenes, the lack of free roaming, the inability to jump, and the extremely slow load speeds certainly all are extremely disappointing aspects of the title, they make playing Lego Marvel Super Heroes: Universe in Peril Review an extremely frustrating experience at times and you definitely feel a little cheated when you consider the various different plus points of the home console release over the handheld title. All things considered though, it’s not quite so easy to take out your home console of choice on public transport and get gaming, and in a handheld gaming title you may well be looking for a different kind of gaming experience that’s catered for with the short level length and mission-based gameplay. This game is not as fully featured as it is on the home consoles, but it does still come with a strong selection of Marvel heroes and a good number of levels to get stuck into. They may not be long levels, if you’re interested in completing each level’s tasks and exploring them with various different Marvel heroes this definitely expands the longevity of the title, however, and for Marvel fans this could definitely be a fun game to help fill the time when you’re out and about.

Lego Marvel Super Heroes: Universe in Peril will not be for everyone due to the short level length and lack of free roaming, for some the level length will be a plus point rather than a criticism, however, and for killing short periods of time this game could definitely do a good job of filling a small gap in your schedule. It’s far from being the greatest handheld title ever released, for those that love their Lego games and are fanatical about their Marvel super heroes it certainly has a fair amount of content to keep you entertained though and it’s a game that does have a few cool features up its sleeve even if it does also feature annoying points and disappoint in certain areas. Lego Marvel Super Heroes: Universe in Peril is certainly not a must-have title, but it’s also not a must-avoid.

The Sea release official video for ‘Get Up, Stand Up, Die’

December 1, 2013 by Rich Leave a Comment

The Sea (Band)

For those that like their music stripped back and extremely hard-hitting, ‘Get Up, Stand Up, Die‘ from The Sea really is a track that is well worth listening to.

With the band only consisting of two members, brothers Alex and Peter, The Sea is a band that comes complete with its own remarkable story with drummer Alex having survived a broken neck that he picked up whilst surfing in 2009. Although it was in doubt whether he’d even walk again, let alone drum again, Alex ultimately made a triumphant return to the sticks and can now be found back at his very drumming best.

‘Get Up, Stand Up, Die‘ is a sub 2 minute track featuring a huge amount of energy and excitement; for a two-piece The Sea certainly manage to make a huge amount of noise, providing a fast and furious piece of music here that really does have much to admire about it.

‘Get Up, Stand Up, Die‘ will be officially released on January 20th and you can check out the official video for the track below:

Lostprophets release statement regarding Ian Watkins

December 1, 2013 by Rich Leave a Comment

Following on from Ian Watkins’ guilty plea earlier in the week in admission of committing child sex offences, Watkins’ former Lostprophets bandmates have now released a statement which can be read in its entirety below:

Earlier this week, we learned that the allegations of child sexual abuse against Ian were true, and that he would not be contesting them in court. Until then, we found them extremely difficult to believe and had hoped it was all a mistake. Sadly, the true extent of his appalling behaviour is now impossible to deny.

Many of you understandably want to know if we knew what Ian was doing. To be clear: We did not. We knew that Ian was a difficult character. Our personal relationships with him had deteriorated in recent years to a point that working together was a constant, miserable challenge. But despite his battles with drugs, his egotistic behaviour, and the resulting fractures and frustrations within our band, we never imagined him capable of behaviour of the type he has now admitted.

We are heartbroken, angry, and disgusted at what has been revealed. This is something that will haunt us for the rest of our lives. Being in a band has always been a labour of love and a platform to inspire people, not to take advantage of them. It’s still hard to believe this is happening and that someone we were once so close to has destroyed so many lives, lying every step of the way.
Our hearts go out to Ian’s family, the fans and friends he betrayed, and most importantly, the victims of his crimes and others like them. We hope for justice, but also that Ian will truly take responsibility for what he’s done. We would urge any other victims to contact the authorities.

Less Than Jake – See the Light

November 17, 2013 by Rich Leave a Comment

After half a decade of inactivity on the studio album front, Less Than Jake really are back with a bang with ‘See the Light‘. Released via Fat Wreck Chords, ‘See the Light‘ is the band’s ninth studio album to date, a thirteen track release that should no doubt please long term fans of the band and win over new admirers, too.

Right from the opening of first track ‘Good Enough‘ there’s a fantastic familiarity about the music; the track is complete with the energy found on early albums such as ‘Losing Streak‘ and ‘Hello Rockview‘, whilst also featuring powerful production values and a strong sense of the pop sensibilities that have helped propel the band forward throughout the years. Blurring the borders (and boundaries) between old school and new school Less Than Jake, ‘Good Enough‘ provides a fantastic introduction to this release, setting the bar extremely high with an opening that makes it instantly clear that ‘See the Light‘ is likely to be an extremely special album from Less Than Jake.

As the band launch their way through the ‘See the Light‘ studio album you get to experience a number of sides and sounds of Less Than Jake, from the short and snappy blast of ‘A Short History Lesson‘, to the more relaxed pace and chilled out vibe of ‘Do the Math‘. The band bounce through the album with a strong sense of style, with the horn section driving right through the heart of the release. Whilst lyrically the album may touch upon some pretty dark subject matter, the band always manage to make the music sound extremely upbeat and positive. There’s an impressive lyrical strength present throughout and you can definitely tell that the band have matured a lot as musicians over the years; you can tell that this is an album from a band with a huge amount of experience, but there’s also much about the music that feels extremely familiar from even the earliest of the band’s releases.

Just as Less Than Jake begin the album with a bang in ‘Good Enough‘, closing number ‘Weekends All Year Long‘ ensures that the album not only has an incredible opening, but also an absolutely sublime closing anthem. There’s an underlying instrumental aggression about the sound, some extremely hard hitting vocals, and also some of the band’s most memorable horn work to date. The track just seems to slot together incredibly nicely in all areas; it’s tight, well worked, and everything about the track just feels right.

Some of the tracks present on this album are amongst the best that Less Than Jake have ever written, and it’s all been produced by the band’s very own Roger Lima, an extremely impressive point when you consider that this album probably has the best production values of any album that the band have ever put out. Less Than Jake’s last album to be put out through Fat Wreck Chords came way back in 2000 with ‘Borders & Boundaries‘, and by returning to Fat Wreck for ‘See the Light‘ they have managed to once again do the label incredibly proud with another incredibly high quality ska punk studio album that should most definitely put a huge smile on the face of fans of the genre.

Everything that made Less Than Jake such an exciting band in the late 90s/early 2000s is still there in abundance with ‘See the Light‘, but there’s also a fantastic depth and lyrical maturity about the band now. Musically the album is extremely tight, and at every step and turn there is much to admire and appreciate about the material on display here. Listening to this album you feel an extreme sense of happiness and joy; not a nostalgic appreciation for what the band were, but a fantastic admiration for what the band very much still are today. After more than 20 years on the scene, Less Than Jake are still as relevant today as ever, producing absolutely fantastic ska punk music that comes complete with lyrical depth, instrumental strength, and a fine art for crafting an incredibly catchy chorus. The ska punk scene may not be as thriving today as it once was, Less Than Jake are still doing their thing with incredible style, however, and they evidence in ‘See the Light‘ just how strong a ska punk band they still truly are.
