The Rise Of Women’s Sports In Video Games

August 18, 2021 by Rich Leave a Comment

A look at the rise of women’s sports in video games, the progress that’s been made so far, and the further work that needs to be done to help push women’s sport forward in the future.

NBA 2K22 will feature a female cover star in Chicago Sky’s Candace Parker, EA PGA Tour will be adding female golfers and golf tournaments when it launches in 2022, and FIFA has also made some major steps forward this year, allowing you to create and use female pros in Pro Clubs as well as naming Alex Scott as the first English speaking female commentator in FIFA history.

Sports Interactive meanwhile have announced that they’ve already started work on a multi-year project to integrate women’s football into Football Manager, and overall there are definitely some positive signs of a brighter video game future for women in sport.

Despite the positive steps that have very definitely been taken, however, there’s still plenty more that can be done, and plenty of scope for sports game developers to shine an even stronger spotlight on women’s sport in the future.

In recent years we’ve seen a whole host of different retro consoles given a fresh lease of life, from Nintendo’s Mini NES and SNES, right through to the Sony PlayStation Classic.

The trend certainly doesn’t show any signs of stopping any time soon though, and in early 2022 we’ll see another incredibly exciting mini console coming in the form of the A500 Mini, inspired by the Amiga 500 which was originally released way back in 1987.

The A500 Mini will feature a total of 25 classic Amiga titles, so far there have only been 12 games confirmed, however, and those are as follows:

Alien Breed 3D, Another World, ATR: All Terrain Racing, Battle Chess, Cadaver, Kick Off 2, Pinball Dreams, Simon The Sorcerer, Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe, The Chaos Engine, Worms: The Director’s Cut, Zool: Ninja Of The ‘nth Dimension.

The console will come complete with a 1.8m wired USB classic mouse, a 1.8m wired precision 8-button gamepad, a USB-A to USB-C power cable, and a 1.8m HDMI cable.

The A500 Mini is all set to hit the shops in early 2022 with a suggested retail price of GBP£119.99/ EUR€129.99/ USD$139.99/ AUD$199.99.

NBA 2K22 Soundtrack to Feature a Fresh Approach

August 4, 2021 by Rich Leave a Comment

2K today announced a fresh approach to their soundtrack for NBA 2K22, where instead of there just being one soundtrack throughout the course of the year, there will be new songs added to the NBA 2K22 soundtrack on the first Friday of every season.

Some incredible UK artists will be highlighted this year with the likes of Aitch, Ghetts and Skepta all being confirmed for the soundtrack, as well as some huge global artists including Travis Scott, Young Thug and Megan Thee Stallion.

Similar to last year, there will also be ways for aspiring artists to become part of the NBA 2K22 soundtrack, and the evolving playlist throughout the course of the year should provide for a more varied and interesting soundtrack experience than ever.

Alfie Brody, NBA 2K Vice President of Global Marketing, had the following to say:

“Over the years, we’ve seen 2K become a platform of music discovery, and we wanted to bring that concept to life in NBA 2K22. Through our exclusive partnerships with some of the top record labels out there, we’re able to create a dynamic soundtrack, complete with early access to unreleased tracks, new artists, and opportunities for fans to become part of the experience and solidify their place in video game history.“

NBA 2K22 will officially be released on September 10th for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Is PES (eFootball) Destined to Just Become a Mobile Game?

July 31, 2021 by Rich Leave a Comment

After rebranding from Pro Evolution Soccer to eFootball, there are concerns in the PES community right now that after more than two decades of releasing football focused console video games, Konami could now be looking to prioritise the mobile gaming space moving forward.

Series producer Seitaro Kimura insists that “We’re still making games on consoles first. We then take that exact same experience and make it available for mobile devices”, however all of the visual evidence that we’ve seen so far has hinted at a lower quality graphical experience than had been expected from the next-gen consoles, and with Konami’s New Football Game build there were a number of features that had seemingly been removed from the game, suggesting a watered down gameplay experience for this years title.

Is there genuine cause for concern here that Konami could be serving a mobile quality game across all platforms, or will it ultimately hold true that the company has made efforts to tailor the visual quality of the game to the hardware of each device?

Speculation will no doubt continue to mount over the course of the coming weeks, with Konami not set to provide more details about their plans and intentions with eFootball until late August.

Confirmed New Features For FIFA 22 Career Mode

July 13, 2021 by Rich Leave a Comment

If you head on over to the FIFA 22 page on the Xbox website, you’ll find confirmation that FIFA 22 career mode will allow you to “Create football’s newest team, design your unique kit, stadium and badge, and manage your club to glory in Career Mode”.

The My Player mode has also been overhauled and FIFA 22’s Player Career mode will now “immerse you in your pro’s journey like never before”.

Last month we learned that there will also be an online career mode coming to FIFA in the future, right now there has been no confirmation that this mode will be readily available in the game in FIFA 22 though, and we would therefore imagine that online career mode will be something to watch out for in FIFA 23 or even FIFA 24 rather than something that you can expect to see coming to the game in September.

Regardless of when online career mode will arrive in FIFA though, the future looks to be incredibly bright when it comes to the popular offline game mode, and the create a club and stadium creation functionality should be fantastic fun to play around with and explore when FIFA 22 drops this summer.
