Happy Halloween!

October 31, 2009 by Rich Leave a Comment

Happy Halloween
Just a quick post to wish you all a very happy Halloween! The BBC has its usual selection of horror on this evening, with a double helping of Haddonfield’s Michael Myers starting with Halloween at 11:20pm, and continuing with Halloween II straight after at 12:50am.

E4 is sticking on its Big Brother zombie drama Dead Set at 10:00pm, whilst Film4 is warming up with the weak The Watcher at 11:00pm, before then kicking on with Suspiria from 12:50am.

Halloween followed by Suspiria is a pretty solid selection for your All Hallows’ Eve viewing I reckon, and of course if you do have the luxury of having Sky Movies then I’m sure there’ll be plenty more to choose from.

Have a great Halloween, and whatever you decide to watch this evening I very much hope you enjoy it.

The End of the X-Factor Road for Miss Frank

October 25, 2009 by Rich 1 Comment

In the bottom two on the X-Factor this week with the least public votes were Miss Frank and Danyl Johnson. Neither had given a bad account of themselves on the show this week so the bottom two was quite difficult to understand, these were the two artists in the bottom two nonetheless though, and it was ultimately these two acts that had to sing for survival in the competition.

‘Love Don’t Live Here Anymore’ was Miss Frank’s track of choice for the sing-off, Danyl Johnson meanwhile opted to sing his audition piece ‘A Little Help From My Friends’. Both sung their hearts out for what would be the last time for one of them, and it was then down to the judge’s to decide who they were going to choose to send home.

With Simon and Louie both choosing to save their own artist’s, it was then down to Dannii and Cheryl to make their decisions. Dannii was first to have her say, deciding to send home Miss Frank, and with Cheryl holding the final vote she decided to send home Danyl so as to take it to a deadlock.

With the artist with the least public votes now facing elimination, it was ultimately Miss Frank that had to say their goodbyes as they left the competition.

Louie now only has one act left in the competition (John and Edward), Simon Cowell and Dannii Minogue both still have all of their initial three artists remaining, and Cheryl Cole has two.

X-Factor Twins John and Edward

October 24, 2009 by Rich Leave a Comment

During the X-Factor audition process I was always hoping to see the last of John and Edward. I was disappointed when they managed to make it all the way through to Boot Camp, but also realised when they made it that far and ended up in Louie’s group that there was a very good chance that they’d ultimately make it through to the live shows.

Sure enough, John and Edward were indeed one of Louie’s three chosen groups, and have now fought their way through to survive two live shows and perform for a third.

Since the start of the live shows, John and Edward have very quickly won me over, and now stand strong as my very favourite act in the competition. Last week’s Britney Spears cover made me smile more than I had done for a long time, and when John and Edward’s safety in the competition was confirmed I was very glad that they’d be back for at least one more week on the X-Factor.

John and Edward are certainly not the best singer’s in the competition, they’re two young guys that are clearly incredibly excited to have made it to the X-Factor live shows however, and every week when they get up on that stage they very much appear to be having a lot of fun. In terms of entertainment provided, John and Edward are the best that the X-Factor has to offer this year, and whilst they may receive boo’s from certain members of the X-Factor live audience; there are plenty of people out there that do like this Irish duo, and Cheryl Cole put it perfectly this evening when she described them as her guilty pleasure.

For the look of absolute horror that it’d put on the face of Simon Cowell, I’d absolutely love to see John and Edward win the X-Factor 2009. I don’t think they will be able to win the whole competition, and if they do ever end up in the bottom two then their chances of remaining in the X-Factor are incredibly slim; for the time being I’m enjoying the John and Edward show though, and will be bitterly disappointed if/when the time does come that they’re forced to leave the competition.

A vote for John and Edward is a vote to keep entertainment in the X-Factor, and tomorrow evening we will hopefully learn that John and Edward are safe to sing again, returning for a fourth week on the X-Factor.

The Guilty Hands Interview

October 22, 2009 by Rich Leave a Comment

We recently sent over a few questions to Martin Allan Grey of The Guilty Hands, and he was kind enough to get them answered for us. Massive thanks to Martin for the interview, and below you’ll find the questions that we asked and the answers that Martin provided us with.

Alt-UK: How did the band first come to be, and has there been any major sort of shift in style since The Guilty Hands first began?

Like a reformed wifebeater might say at his church group, I prefer not to dwell on the past. It’s all about the now!

Alt-UK: Do you feel that being based in London has been a positive thing for the band, and if you could relocate to anywhere in the world, would you want to move, and if so, where?

Well part of me would like to relocate to some backwater town where they’re so woefully short of good music, particularly live bands, that anyone half decent should get an ecstatic reception. Possibly Liverpool. But London is too much fun to leave behind permanently.

Alt-UK: Have you got any idea in mind about what your next single may be?

We’re currently in the process of writing an album, and we don’t want to set out to make a single, we just want to make a great record and pick the most singly track once we’re done.

Alt-UK: You recently raised £15,000 on Slicethepie to record a new album; how did it feel when you found out that you were up for finance, let alone when you actually achieved it?

To be honest, when I heard we were up for finance, I thought “about time”. I was more surprised when the money really started rising, I think a couple of investors put in big amounts, and I’m particularly grateful to them – as that really got the ball rolling and encouraged other people to contribute.

Alt-UK: Have you had any ideas yet about exactly how you’ll be using the £15,000?

Well as part of the deal we produce a detailed budget for slicethepie to approve – we don’t just get a cheque! We’ll be obviously spending money on recording, but keeping costs down where possible. We also need to fund rehearsals, equipment purchases, repair, and hire, PR and marketing, van hire for touring – all sorts.

Alt-UK: As well as receiving the £15,000 for the album, you also won a Gibson Les Paul for being the first band to achieve financing, that must have been a pretty cool added bonus.

I don’t think anyone’s going to say no to a guitar worth about a grand, put it that way.

Alt-UK: Are there any plans to tour extensively once the new album is released, or are you just taking things as they come right now, without any major plans for the future?

Touring depends on the response to the album and the amount of press and industry interest it generates. We don’t want to spend money travelling to far-off towns unless we’re supporting a high profile act, or if our own profile has risen significantly. However we do have plans for a short tour of mainland Europe, where both promoters and audiences are renowned for being more generous than on our little island. Sorry, UK. Time to join the single currency, perhaps.

Alt-UK: If you could play alongside any artist in the world, who would you choose?

I’ll be democratic here and think of a band we all like. I’ll say 10CC.

Alt-UK: Is there any gig from the past that particularly sticks in your mind for any reason?

I would say the gig we played in Ypres, Belgium was especially memorable. The friendliness of the venues, the organisers, the audience, and their generosity in feeding and homing us (and buying our tshirts) will stick in my mind for a long time.

Alt-UK: If you were just starting The Guilty Hands now, with the benefit of hindsight, is there anything that you’d do differently?

Probably wouldn’t have spent so much money on recording. Our producer did a great job, but it didn’t really generate any more interest than our home recorded demos had. Even now we’ve got £15,000 to spend, we’re being as thrifty as we can without sacrificing quality.

You Me At Six – Kiss and Tell EP

October 20, 2009 by Rich 1 Comment

You Me At Six - Kiss and Tell EPYou Me At Six has done it again, bringing out another very impressive single in the form of ‘Kiss and Tell’. Not only is the main single excellent, but the band has actually included another two tracks here to form an EP, including a hugely impressive cover of Lady Gaga’s ‘Poker Face’.

You Me At Six just seems to be able to reel out hit after hit at the moment, and with ‘Kiss and Tell’ the band has been able to put to record yet another incredibly infectious chorus. It’s a very fun piece of music to listen to, the drumbeat hits hard all throughout the track, and the guitar quality offered by the band here is hugely impressive also. The band is able to pack a lot of power into the music here, and this is something that continues with the ‘Poker Face’ cover also.

Arguably better than the original, You Me At Six is able to give ‘Poker Face’ a real rock feel, and again it is the guitar quality here that stands out strongly about the music. The vocals hit hard, there’s real venom in the guitar though, and this is what really makes the track the powerful piece of sound that it is.

Slowing things down for the final track, You Me At Six decides to treat us to an acoustic version of ‘Kiss and Tell’, and although the speed is slowed here, the quality certainly isn’t lessened. The acoustic nature of the track really does come across nicely here, providing a fittingly fantastic finish to a very impressive EP.

If you’ve been impressed by any of the previous singles that You Me At Six has released then you’re sure to find ‘Kiss and Tell’ incredibly enjoyable also, and if you haven’t already taken the time to give this EP a listen then I’d definitely recommend doing so. You Me At Six has once again been able to provide the goods here, offering up a 3-track EP that I have very much enjoyed listening to.

Cobra Starship – Good Girls Go Bad

October 19, 2009 by Rich Leave a Comment

Cobra Starship - Good Girls Go BadFeaturing special guest vocals from Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester, ‘Good Girls Go Bad’ is the first single from Cobra Starship’s ‘Hot Mess’ studio album, and a very catchy piece of music it is too. Unashamedly cheesy, ‘Good Girls Go Bad’ is an incredibly fun track, and is one that will no doubt get a lot of people dancing. Some Midtown fans may not approve of Gabe Saporta’s Cobra Starship, I for one am most definitely a massive fan of the band however, and have been since first hearing ‘Bring It (Snakes on a Plane)’ back in 2006.

‘Good Girls Go Bad’ may not be the best song ever written, it’s certainly a very catchy piece of pop music however, and the vocals of Leighton Meester here really do work well alongside Gabe Saporta’s. It’s an incredibly upbeat piece of music, fun to dance along to, and everything about this track is just absolutely jam packed full of positivity.

If you’ve heard the music of Cobra Starship before and aren’t already a fan then this is not a track that is likely to change your opinion, if you’ve been a fan of the band’s music in the past or are yet to give Cobra Starship’s music a listen however then I definitely recommend giving this one a go.

Cobra Starship’s ‘Good Girls Go Bad’ will no doubt be blasting out of my speakers for some time to come, and if you too have a soft spot for cheesy pop music then ‘Good Girls Go Bad’ is a track that you really must hear.
