Introducing Alkaline Trio

June 4, 2010 by Rich Leave a Comment

Having featured FACT, Rolo Tomassi, We Are The Ocean, and Fireworks throughout the week, bringing an end to our Hassle Records Week of Slam Dunk bands is Alkaline Trio (although we do still have some non band specific Hassle Records activity planned for the weekend). Alkaline Trio is a band that probably doesn’t need too much introduction, introducing them we are though, so here’s what we have to offer about the Illinois three-piece.

After forming in 1996 it took the band just two years to record its debut studio album as ‘Goddamnit’ was released through Asian Man Records in 1998, and with its half hour album of punk rock the band was quickly able to establish quite a name for itself. A second album followed in 2000 in ‘Maybe I’ll Catch Fire’, again through Asian Man Records, and in 2001 it was time for the band to hit the mainstream with its Vagrant Records release ‘From Here to Infirmary’ which saw the band have two hit singles in ‘Private Eye’ and ‘Stupid Kid’.

With Alkaline Trio now well on the road to success, it was time for the band’s most popular album to date as ‘Good Mourning’ was released in 2003. With this release came further single success, and Alkaline Trio was now well and truly a force to be reckoned with within the punk rock world. With ‘Crimson’, ‘Agony & Irony’, and ‘This Addiction’ having now followed, Alkaline Trio is a band with seven albums worth of material behind it, and with such a healthy back catalogue the band has continued to grow and flourish.

2010’s ‘This Addiction’ has been Alkaline Trio’s most successful album to date as it has reached number 11 on the Billboard 200; a resounding success for the band’s very first release through its own Heart & Skull record label (joint released with Epitaph). With seven albums behind them, the future looks to be rather bright for Alkaline Trio, and if the band continues to run like clockwork then we can no doubt expect to see studio album number eight released at some stage in 2012.

The following is the official video for ‘This Addiction’, the title track and first released single from the band’s most recent release:

Slam Dunk South (2010) Review

June 4, 2010 by Rich 1 Comment

Slam Dunk South was a festival that I’d been looking forward to for some time, and as the festival hit Hertfordshire it certainly didn’t disappoint. There were some serious congestion issues in the main foyer for the latter half of the day, if you weren’t stuck queuing however then there were certainly some fun times to be had.

Every Avenue was the first band we got to see once we’d made our way to the Glamour Kills Stage, and whilst the vocals seemed to be drowned out in the mix; the band still managed to put on a pretty decent performance as it launched through its half hour set. Whilst the sound levels could have been improved that’s certainly not the band’s fault, and Every Avenue gave a good effort as they looked to warm up the Hatfield crowd.

Heading outdoors to the Jagermeister Stage, the next band we got to see was Young Guns, and with perfect sound the young Bucks band certainly put on a show to remember. Young Guns has supported Lostprophets in the past and there are definite similarities between the two bands; as vocalist Gustav Wood bounced around the stage there was definitely some strong energy in the set, and the crisp and clean sound really helped to make Young Guns’ appearance something rather special. Whilst the indoor sound quality had underwhelmed, being treated to such clarity from the outdoor stage was definitely something to treasure, and Young Guns was able to take full advantage of the strong quality of sound with its impressive display of passionate rock music.

Back to the Glamour Kills Stage and it was now the turn of Ohio pop punk band Hit the Lights to show what they had to offer. Just like Every Avenue before them, Hit the Lights was given 30 minutes to please, and used their time well as they went through a number of upbeat pop punk songs. The sound was still suffering from imperfect levels, Hit the Lights was having fun onstage though, and the crowd seemed to enjoy the performance also. As soon as Hit the Lights had finished their set, Southampton’s Not Advised began playing on the Kerrang! Introducing Stage at the back of the room, and this was another performance that was not to be missed.

Not Advised is a band that I’d not previously come across, I’m certainly glad to have seen them play at Slam Dunk though, and the band genuinely seemed to hugely appreciate the opportunity to play the festival. Not Advised vocalist Jim Thomas has an absolutely incredible voice, and this was something that stood out strongly as the band played through its set. The band had a lot of energy to offer, had the crowd singing along with its upbeat pop punk, and definitely did much to please its audience. If you get a chance to see Not Advised in the future then I would 100% recommend doing so as you’ll not be left disappointed.

Turning back towards the Glamour Kills stage and it was time to watch Set Your Goals; a band that a lot of people were clearly quite excited to see, and they played their set well with their interesting mix of pop punk and hardcore. Matt Wilson’s microphone wasn’t working at the start of the set and to begin with half of the band’s vocals were therefore inaudible, once the microphone situation was sorted though the band was really able to pack a punch with its dual vocal assault. Hoping to see some of RX Bandits set we missed the last few tracks of Set Your Goals’ set, due to congestion in the foyer however we had to forget about getting to see any of RX Bandits as we made our way back out to the Jagermeister Stage to watch We Are The Ocean.

Just like it had been for Young Guns at the Jagermeister Stage, the sound was absolutely perfect for We Are The Ocean, and the band put on the performance of the day so far as it punched through a powerful selection of songs. Covering material from its EPs as well as the ‘Cutting Our Teeth’ album, We Are The Ocean was really able to get the crowd moving, and chief screamer Dan Brown was a crowd hero as he jumped into the pit to get his screaming going from there. Dan also climbed a tree whilst out in the crowd, screamed from the branch, filmed the crowd from a video camera that was thrown up to him, and jumped back down again in slightly moss covered clothes. There was a lot to love about We Are The Ocean’s set; Liam Cromby has an absolutely sublime voice as the band’s clean singing vocalist, Tom Whittaker is a brilliant drummer, and the band always has a lot to offer with its guitars also. Add to this the passion and energy of Dan Brown and you have a live band that can never be accused of providing a dull moment. Aside from New Found Glory, We Are The Ocean was the band that stood out most at Slam Dunk Festival for me, and when the band tours in October I’ll be heading along to a few of the bands shows for more without a shadow of a doubt.

Back to the Glamour Kills Stage for one final time and it was not the turn of Four Year Strong to impress the Hatfield crowd. With four tracks from 2007s ‘Rise Or Die Trying’ and five from 2009s ‘Enemy of the World’, it was an even a split as the band possibly could have provided, and a nice selection of tracks from both of the band’s studio albums to date. Four Year Strong has never been my favourite pop punk band, they’re certainly not a bad band though and had good interaction with the crowd as they created a rather large pit and made sure that their music went down well with the fans that had shown up to see them.

When the Slam Dunk line-up was announced and I realised that New Found Glory and Capdown were going to clash, I have to say that I was bitterly disappointed. As much as I would have loved to have seen both of these bands, unfortunately a decision had to be made, and it was pop punk heroes New Found Glory that I ultimately decided to settle with, sadly meaning that I missed my favourite Milton Keynes skacore band. I’ll always have very fond memories of watching Capdown, getting into a fantastic position for New Found Glory I was not to be disappointed with my decision though, and New Found Glory for me was the ultimate headliner.

Celebrating in style a decade since the release of the ‘Nothing Gold Can Stay’ debut, New Found Glory launched through a set of 20 tracks, covering all six of their studio albums and even finding room for a couple of covers from the ‘From the Screen to Your Stereo Part II’ album in ‘Iris’ and ‘Kiss Me’. The performance was high in energy, packed full of fun, and there wasn’t a person in the room not having fun as the band gave its all from start to finish. The band mixed it up well as it played its way through the albums, and although the band left the stage after ‘Hit Or Miss’ having already covered a lot of ground; it was clear that the set was not yet over, and the crowd was well poised for the encore of ‘Truth of my Youth’ and ‘My Friends Over You’ as it began to chant ‘NFG’ rather loudly. For me, the only way the night could have been any better is if the band had played ‘Dig My Own Grave’ from the 2008 ‘Tip of the Iceberg’ EP released through Bridge Nine Records, sticking to the studio albums and cover album was certainly fine with me though, and not a single track of the 20 disappointed. The likes of ‘Head On Collision’, ‘Hit Or Miss’, and ‘Dressed To Kill’ were all there, as too were ‘All Downhill From Here’ and ‘Failures Not Flattering’ from the ‘Catalyst’ album, and as the band finished with ‘My Friends Over You’ I was left with a fantastic feeling of absolute satisfaction. New Found Glory put on an awesome show at Hertfordshire University, and if I’d gone along to the Leeds show the next day then I probably would have made the same decision again to finish the day with New Found Glory.

After an absolutely fantastic pop punk performance from New Found Glory it was time to head for the doors, as there was live music coming from the Jagermeister Stage it was clear that Alkaline Trio had not yet finished their set however and there was therefore time for a little more fun.

Arriving at the Jagermeister Stage we were able to catch closing tracks ‘Stupid Kid’, ’97’, and ‘Radio’, and the night therefore finished with the famous Illinois three-piece that is Alkaline Trio. There definitely wasn’t the same level of fun and excitement for Alkaline Trio that there was for New Found Glory, the band played the three tracks well however and before long Slam Dunk South 2010 was officially over.

All in all Slam Dunk South was an absolutely fantastic festival; there were a few problems with the sound on the Glamour Kills Stage, there were congestion issues with the venue, and next year there are a few things that will have to be done differently (presuming that Slam Dunk South is once again held at Hertfordshire University), a good day was still had though, and we at Alt-UK got to see a great selection of bands. Roll on Slam Dunk 2011, and here’s to hoping that some more brilliant bands will be booked for next year’s festival.

Official Statement Released Regarding Slam Dunk South

June 3, 2010 by Rich 1 Comment

Ben Ray, promoter of the Slam Dunk Festival, has released an official statement regarding the situation at this year’s Slam Dunk Festival at Hertfordshire University. The statement reads as follows:

Thank you everyone for attending the Slam Dunk Festivals – North & South, their pre parties, Slam Dunk By The Sea, Slam Dunk Scotland, and Slam Dunk vs Shakedown. We’d also like to thank all the bands that played across all the stages and events, as well as all the sponsors.

All the events were great and the vast majority of the feedback has been amazing! Everything ran smoothly apart from the one incident at Slam Dunk Festival South in Hatfield.

First of all we would like to profusely apologise to anyone that experienced access issues at this event. We have spent the last 3 days reading various message boards, forums, reading emails and messages, to establish the problems that people encountered.

Up until approximately 6:30pm the traffic between the venues had been flowing freely, but at that point the rain started coming down harder so a lot of people headed indoors. At the same time a band had just finished in the main room, which started to empty out. With a large of people trying to go downstairs and a large number of people coming towards them the two met and the area that fed a number of the venues ground to a standstill.

This incident was the catalyst that started it all and which took too long to recover from. The primary concern was health and safety so that’s why the numbers to this area were limited for a period of time that was unnecessarily long. Thankfully there were no injuries and everyone was kept safe.

Slam Dunk Festival prides itself as being one of the best value festivals in the UK so we cannot stress enough that the event was not oversold as some people were claiming. Like any festival, the capacity is not worked out on any one area, and unfortunately no one can be guaranteed access to see any one particular band. We accept that during the certain times it looked like there were a lot more people trying to get into one particular stage because the queues had become joined and it became hard to separate them out to get people to where they wanted to go. This eventually did happen and the majority of the people did get into see the acts that they wanted.

We accept that there are some people that didn’t get in to see one or more bands that they were there to see, and we apologise for this again. We also know that a lot more people were inconvenienced in some way such as lengthy queues but the majority of people did have a good time and got to see many bands. It was the first time we had run the event at the venue, and although various health and safety checks and planning had been carried out, the problem of a sudden downpour was not thought of such a serious issue.

The fact that the Leeds event ran without any problems is a testament to the fact that this event can work in a similar venue, although the weather was better and all the stages were indoors.

Slam Dunk Festival has grown over the years from a little club night in Leeds up to what we did this weekend and while we know that a small number of people are going to be left very unhappy, we can only ask that they give us another chance to prove that this event can work and we will spend the next 12 months planning to ensure nothing like this can happen again.

Thankyou for your understanding

Four Year Strong Announces Plans to Release ‘Enemy of the World’ Special Edition

June 3, 2010 by Rich Leave a Comment

Heading out on the Warped Tour from June through August, Four Year Strong will be celebrating playing the festival by releasing a special edition version of its ‘Enemy of the World‘ studio album.

‘Enemy of the World‘ was originally released in March, from June 25th through to August 2nd however there will be a special edition available featuring a number of additional tracks. With acoustic versions of ‘Tonight We Feel Alive (On a Saturday)‘, ‘Wasting Time (Eternal Summer)‘, ‘Find My Way Back‘, and ‘One Step At A Time‘ all set for inclusion on the updated release, the band will also be adding an entirely new track in ‘Bad News Bearz‘ and there’s therefore plenty of reason to get your hands on the special edition album whilst it’s available.

Four Year Strong is currently in the UK having played a number of shows since arriving in the country on March 28th, and will soon be jetting off to play the Powerfest in Amsterdam as well as a couple of shows in Germany and France with Fireworks and The Wonder Years.

Rancid – Poison Video

June 3, 2010 by Rich Leave a Comment

We’re taking a trip back to 2000 today as Rancid’s ‘Poison‘ video has been dug up and found its way onto Youtube. It’s only a short one, despite being a decade old though this is a track that still sounds fresh today, and it definitely feels good to be reminded of where the band was at 10 years ago.

Fireworks Interview

June 3, 2010 by Rich Leave a Comment

Continuing with our Hassle Records week we sent a few questions through to Fireworks, and guitarist Chris Mojan was the man that was kind enough to get back to us with his responses.

Massive thanks to Chris Mojan for providing us with this interview, and I’m sure you’ll join us in wishing Fireworks good luck for the show at the Islington Academy with Four Year Strong and The Wonder Years this evening:

Alt-UK: You recently toured the U.S. with New Found Glory, Hellogoodbye, and Saves the Day, over the weekend you played the Relentless Stage at the Slam Dunk Festival, and you’re now about to head off for a few dates in Germany/France with Four Year Strong and The Wonder Years; it’s been a pretty special year for you so far, what’s it been like to have played such high profile shows?

Chris Mojan: I’d definitely say this last year or so has taken a bit of adjusting. It took us awhile to get used to playing shows in these settings as opposed to the smaller diy shows we’d play on our own. With that said though, it’s been incredible. It feels great to be playing to so many more people and sharing the stage with so many great friends, new and old.

Alt-UK: Did you get to see many other bands at Slam Dunk, and if so, which bands particularly stood out for you at the festival?

CM: With all of the running around and general insanity regarding festivals it was really hard to catch a lot of bands. The ones that stood out for me though were Moneen, Alkaline Trio, Crime In Stereo and The Wonder Years. Great bands.

Alt-UK: What would you say has been your favourite show to date since forming, and are there any bands that you particularly enjoy touring with?

CM: Hmm. Picking one show is difficult. I’d say the release show for AIHTOIMOC would be a good bet. It was a home show which meant all of our friends and families could be there, so many people came out and every band that played was incredible. Although playing shows in places like Sydney and Moscow is hard to top.

Alt-UK: If you could tour with any bands in the world, which would you most like to play alongside?

CM: I think I’d like to tour with She And Him so I can become friends with Zooey and her husband. Or perhaps Grinder, Darren McCarty of the Detroit Red Wings band…

Alt-UK: It was only in December that you came to the UK for the first time, how have you found that your music has been received in the UK and how does playing here compare to playing in America?

CM: Everything is so different here. I can honestly say kids seem to be way more into having a good time at shows here. It’s also strange to go to clubs here and hear us and our friends bands being played. Way different culture. I wouldn’t step foot in a club in the states.

Alt-UK: Having toured the UK a few times now as a support band, do you think that in the next year or so we’ll be seeing you come back over here as the headline band?

CM: That’s the plan

Alt-UK: Growing up in Detroit you were obviously fans of pop punk, what other genres would you say appeal to you most though, and which bands would you say have had the greatest influence on you?

CM: Indie rock, hardcore, punk rock whatever really. We tend to listen to it all. When we started we were really influenced by bands from the Toronto area like Boys Night Out and The Fullblast . Then of course obvious ones like Descendents and Jawbreaker. We never really set out to sound like any of them though.

Alt-UK: What albums have you been listening to on the tour bus lately, and are there any in particular that you’d like to recommend to our readers?

CM: Records I’ve been listening to lately.. The National-High Violet, Good Old War, Harms Way-No Gods, No Masters, there’s a lot more, but I can’t remember right now. I’d recommend all of them really.

Alt-UK: Not only have you toured with New Found Glory, but Chad Gilbert actually produced your ‘All I Have to Offer is My Own Confusion’ debut; what was it like working with him on the record?

CM: It was great. He is a great friend of ours, and had a lot to offer to the record.

Alt-UK: It must have been pretty cool releasing your debut through Triple Crown Records in the U.S., the label that Brand New released ‘Your Favourite Weapon’ and ‘Deja Entendu’ through, will you be sticking with them for album number two and when can we expect the follow-up to ‘All I Have to Offer is My Own Confusion’ to be released?

CM: Yes, they will be releasing the next full length, which will hopefully be out around the same time as AIHTO was released last time. So this March/April?

Alt-UK: You recorded your first promo video last year for ‘Detroit’, how did it feel to get your first video recorded and what did you think of the way that it turned out?

CM: It was probably the most exhausting, yet fun two days of my life. Our good friend Matt did the video as a big favor basically, we’ve grown up with him and he’s went so far doing what he’s doing, so we were most excited to work with him.

Alt-UK: Do you currently have any plans to get another promotional video recorded, and if you could record a video for any track from your album, which do you feel that you’d have the most fun with?

CM: We have no plans, but if we did another video I think we’d do 2923 Monroe St.

Alt-UK: 2010 has obviously been a pretty great year for you so far, what are your plans for the rest of the year though once you’ve finished the show in Stuttgart next week?

CM: We will be home writing for two months, then doing a two month headliner with some great bands in the States.

Alt-UK: Best of luck for the show at the Islington Academy this evening; is there anything else that you’d like to mention to our readers that we haven’t already covered?

CM: Nope. You have covered it all. Thanks friend.

Introducing Fireworks

June 3, 2010 by Rich Leave a Comment

Fireworks is a pop punk band from Metro Detroit, Michigan that has been around now since 2006. To date the band has released a total of three different EPs, and in 2009 the band released its debut full length studio album through Triple Crown Records. ‘All I Have to Offer is My Own Confusion’ is the title of the band’s debut, and the album was produced by New Found Glory’s Chad Gilbert.

2010 has been a great year for Fireworks as the band has toured in support of the likes of New Found Glory, Hellogoodbye, Four Year Strong, and Saves the Day, and in the last year the band also put to film its very first promo video for the track ‘Detroit’ (the video can be found here at YouTube). All in all the band has been making some absolutely massive steps, and heading into the future Fireworks is a band that is bound to make many more as it progresses and matures.

Although the band is signed to Triple Crown Records in the U.S. (the label that gave us Brand New’s ‘Your Favourite Weapon’ and ‘Deja Entendu’ albums), here in the UK the band’s music is released through Hassle Records, and on the weekend of May 29th-May 30th the band played the Slam Dunk Festival in Hatfield/Leeds along with fellow Hassle Records artists Alkaline Trio, We Are The Ocean, Rolo Tomassi, and FACT.

Having had a busy start to 2010, Fireworks will be spending the next couple of months writing with a view to getting an album out there in March/April 2011, and will then spend a few months headlining shows in the States as the band looks to add to its already incredibly impressive gigging history.

Bad Religion Enters the Studio to Begin Work on Studio Album Number Fifteen

June 2, 2010 by Rich Leave a Comment

Bad Religion
is a band that has been impressing us with its music for more than three decades now, and to celebrate the fantastic milestone of staying together for more than 30 years; the band has now announced that it has entered the studio to record its fifteenth studio album.

Joe Barresi (Queens Of The Stone Age, Tool) will once again be in charge of production duties, and the band is now ready to put 16 songs to record for release on the as yet untitled fifteenth Bad Religion studio album.

It’s been three years since the release of ‘New Maps of Hell’ so it’s therefore very welcome news that the band will be releasing a new studio album soon, and there will no doubt be many hoping that Bad Religion will be able to get the album out there through Epitaph before the turn of the year.
