Blink-182 – Up All Night

July 30, 2011 by Rich Leave a Comment

It’s always a strange moment when one of your favourite artists releases a new single; a case of excitement yet also nervousness. When it has been eight years since the band released its last album this therefore heightens the emotions substantially. After such a period without new material, will your long-term favourite band still be able to deliver? Will you be able to hold the new material in such high regard? Upon first listening to ‘Up All Night‘ I feared not.

When Blink-182 went on an extended hiatus in 2005, Tom DeLonge went on to form Angels & Airwaves whilst Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker focussed on a new project in the form of +44. Listening to ‘Up All Night‘ is like hearing the band bring together their hiatus projects with the Blink-182 that we know and love. There’s a greater sense of maturity about the band, as was beginning to be evidenced with the band’s final release before the hiatus, and in fact with ‘Stay Together For the Kids‘ from the ‘Take Off Your Pants and Jacket‘ album also. The band has clearly progressed and matured, and upon first listening to the single I was a little fearful of the change. Did the band still do it for me? Was ‘Up All Night‘ a credible return for the band, or was it in fact a massive disappointment after all these years away? Upon repeated listens to ‘Up All Night‘ I found my answer.

‘Up All Night‘ is another absolutely brilliant single release from the fantastic pop-punk band that is Blink-182. The band has most definitely evolved, after nearly a decade since 2003s self-titled release however is that really such a bad thing? Would I prefer for the band to have stagnated and not progressed its sound? Upon reflection, no I wouldn’t.

With its incredible introduction, ‘Up All Night‘ instantly grabs you, having you hooked right from the offset. Tom DeLonge powering away on the guitar, Travis Barker delights with his stick skills as always, and we have ourselves another hit from Blink-182. The opening riff from Tom DeLonge is incredibly catchy, it has you wanting to pick up a guitar and play it for yourself; the supreme power of inspiration still shining through as Blink-182 provides us with another absolute aural delight. Not only is this opening guitar hook incredibly catchy, but the chorus also is equally infectious.  After listening to the track a couple of times you find yourself unable to stop yourself singing along to the chorus, tapping away to the beat on your desk as you do so. ‘Up All Night‘ is an incredible comeback from Blink-182; undoubtedly different to what most people surely expected from the world’s biggest pop-punk band, brilliant nonetheless however, and an extremely catchy single that Blink-182 can rightly be extremely proud of.

I was extremely disappointed when Blink-182 announced its hiatus in 2005, I always kept the faith that the band would be back though and was over the moon when the band announced its return in early 2009.  Two and a half years later and we can celebrate properly the return of Blink-182; the band has a new single in the form of ‘Up All Night‘, and in September the band’s gift to us is sixth studio album ‘Neighborhoods‘. If ‘Up All Night‘ is anything to go by then ‘Neighborhoods‘ will most certainly be an album well worth adding to your collection.

This is not the same Blink-182 that left us in 2005, this is a Blink-182 that has benefitted from several years apart to focus on other projects; this is a Blink-182 that will come back bigger and better than ever.

Amy Winehouse’s Most Successful Singles

July 24, 2011 by Rich Leave a Comment

Stronger Than Me

‘Stronger Than Me’ from the ‘Frank’ album was where it all started for Amy Winehouse; the track was released in late 2003 as her first single as a major label artist, a track that earned her this appearance on Jools Holland.

‘Stronger Than Me’ was not Amy’s most successful hit, it was the starting point for her as an artist in the spotlight however, with the ‘Frank‘ album going on to become 3x Platinum in the UK.

Rehab

The biggest hit of her career, ‘Rehab’ was a top 10 success on both sides of the Atlantic, hitting number 7 in the UK and number 9 in the US.

Amy Winehouse enjoyed great success with ‘Rehab’, earning her chart success all throughout the world.

Valerie

When Amy Winehouse teamed up with Mark Ronson in 2007, she was in for another smash hit as the pair covered The Zutons’ successful single ‘Valerie’, taking it to number 2 in the UK charts; 7 places higher than The Zutons themselves managed to go with the track.

Amy Winehouse later had further success with ‘Valerie’ as she covered it as a solo artist for Radio 1’s Live Lounge, with this cover of the track also entering the UK singles chart.

You Know I’m No Good

Her second US Hot 100 success, Amy Winehouse reached number 77 with ‘You Know I’m No Good’ in 2007, also reaching number 18 with the track in the UK singles chart.

‘You Know I’m No Good’ was to be Amy Winehouse’s last Hot 100 hit within her lifetime.

Tears Dry on Their Own

Her second biggest UK success as a solo artist, ‘Tears Dry on Their Own’ reached number 16 in the UK singles chart, with Amy Winehouse’s ‘Tears Dry on Their Own’ spending nineteen weeks total inside the UK singles chart.

Back To Black

‘Back To Black’ was a success in several countries throughout Europe, performing particularly well in Austria and Germany where it was a top 10 success.

In her homeland of the UK, Amy Winehouse reached number 25 with ‘Back To Black’.

Introducing: The Carpels

July 22, 2011 by Tim Osbourne Leave a Comment

Birmingham-based five-piece The Carpels are about as eclectic as you can get, creating a merged modern sound from a vast array of genres including punk, dubstep, indie and electronica.

The band scored a record deal with local label One Beat Records last year which is owned and run by Jon Brookes (the legendary drummer of The Charlatans) and his business partner Ian Light which has exposed them to a huge influx of attention from the industry.

Last month they played at The Queen of Hoxton in London as part of the club night This Feeling with fellow Birmingham outfit Tantrums. There, they were snapped by Libertines photographer Roger Sargent, who has a reputation for shooting bands which are heading for the mainstream.

They were also fortunate enough to have their debut single, Sand, played on BBC Radio 1 as part of Rob da Bank’s show and by Mark Radcliffe on his show on BBC 6Music.

For a band that’s still in its infancy (most of the boys are only 18 apparently) they seem to be causing a sensational storm!

Their new track, called ‘Handshakes‘, was produced by Jim Spencer who’s worked with New Order, The Cribs, Doves and Shaun Ryder amongst others. It perfectly exemplified the clean sound that The Carpels are becoming known for with screaming vocals and catchy lyrics.

Introducing: Testtone3

July 22, 2011 by Tim Osbourne Leave a Comment

Photo: Annique Albericci

Testtone3 should be hailed one of Leeds’ most exciting and innovative bands of the last decade, coming across like a phat (note, the ph…) mutant crossbreed of Pendulum and Hendrix, the group is made up of Adam Gauton (vocals), Andrew Precious (bass) and Richard Precious on synths and programming alongside the more recent addition of robo-armed drummer Matt Collinge.

As stated, the band’s music crosses genres in a way that few other acts in the North of England can confidently boast. Taking the heavier parts of Pendulum and mixing that in with the punk snarl of The Prodigy and the accessible guitar goodness of Mr. Hendrix, Testtone have afforded themselves a strong reputation on a local and national level for raucous-yet-technically-sound live performances and solid recordings. With a slew of well-received TV and radio appearances recently, the band is starting to see their hard work pay off with some nice festival spots over this summer.

The band formed in 2004 with a core mission to create a hybrid between electronic music and classic rock and roll sounds. The four have been credited in the past as one of Yorvik’s hardest working and most accessible live acts and they have toured extensively in the north which has afforded them dedicated followers in key areas like Hull, Leeds and Manchester.

The act’s first EP, ‘Fuelled By Substance’ was released in 2007 and central tracks like ‘Goin’ Down’ and ‘Get On The Dancefloor’ display the band’s feel-good attitude toward making music to enjoy and dance to. On the former, sky-scraping classic guitar riffs meet jackhammer beats inspired by The Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers and Adam G’s Brian Molko (Placebo)-esque vocal stylings for a resounding and heavy-hitting combination.

The band has more recently released an EP, ‘Mind Graffiti’. Early indications are that the group has evolved from a scene standouts into a polished electro-rock juggernaut set to give the likes of Foals and Does It Offend You, Yeah? a decent run for their money. The thing that separates Testtone from the aforementioned big-hitters and other up-and-coming local crossover bands on the scene is their energy.

Call me clichéd, but honestly the live performance has to be seen to be believed. This lot are mental on stage and their approach is effortlessly entertaining. It’s like one massive rollercoaster night out, Testtone3 is pure skull-candy.

Lady GaGa – Born This Way (Heavy Metal Version)

July 17, 2011 by Rich Leave a Comment

Inspired presumably by the viral success of Wax Audio’s Lady Gaga vs Judas Priest mashup that hit the internet last month, Evile’s lead guitarist Ol Drake has decided to put together a heavy metal version of Lady GaGa’s ‘Born This Way‘, receiving over 50,000 views in the 2 weeks since he uploaded it to YouTube. Ol isn’t quite at the level of Wax Audio’s million plus views yet, hopefully he can hit the 100,000+ point before long however, and with online coverage from the likes of Blabbermouth, Bloody Disgusting, and Metal Hammer, as well as a mention in this week’s Kerrang! Magazine, the views are bound to keep coming in for Ol in the coming days and weeks.

Although featuring the vocals of the original Lady GaGa track, Ol Drake has decided to shake things up a bit here by providing his own alternative, heavy metal instrumental backing. I can’t say I’ve ever been the biggest Lady GaGa fan in the world, what Ol has done with the track is certainly impressive however, and there’s a great element of fun about the music. It’s not quite up there with ‘Chewbacca For Good‘, definitely still well worth a listen though, with Ol Drake once more

Ol Drake’s heavy metal version of ‘Born This Way‘ definitely won’t be for everyone, and I’m sure there are plenty of Evile fans out there that hate it; this isn’t an Evile track though, this is Ol Drake having a bit fun, and if you don’t like it then just don’t listen to it then. The guitar work is strong here, and Lady GaGa’s vocals actually sound pretty awesome with this sort of instrumental backing. Listen to the music of Evile and you’ll be able to hear for yourself that Ol Drake is an excellent guitarist, this is something that also shines through with this ‘Born This Way‘ cover, and Ol Drake has done an absolutely cracking job of putting this one together.

Evile’s third studio album ‘Five Serpent’s Teeth‘ is due for release in late September, and if the exposure gained from Ol’s heavy metal version of Lady GaGa’s ‘Born This Way‘ can help to bring in any extra fans for the band then this can only really be see as a good thing. Another potential plus point springing from Ol Drake’s cover and indeed Wax Audio’s mashup is that it may just lead Lady GaGa to the realisation that heavy metal is the way forward for her and that she’s been wasting her talents these past few years in producing pop music. Who knows what the future may well hold for Lady GaGa, but if you’d like to get an idea of what it might well sound like if Lady GaGa does ever decide to go metal then take a listen to the track below.

Blink-182’s Up All Night Unveiled

July 15, 2011 by Rich 1 Comment

Blink-182 has officially unveiled its first new track for years as ‘Up All Night‘ has finally hit the internet.

Sounding like a mix of hiatus period projects +44 and Angels and Airwaves, the new Blink-182 sound is most definitely different to what the band was producing in the past, progression is clearly key here however, and the band certainly can’t be accused of having stood still.

Not everyone may entirely appreciate the band’s new change of direction, having listened to the track upwards of about 15 times already however, this track has most certainly been a hit here at Alt-UK. The first listen didn’t entirely grab me, with repeated listens came increased enjoyment however, and I now feel that Blink-182 has once again produced the goods and come up with an absolutely incredible new single.

What do you think of the new Blink-182 sound?
